Cot to bed transition

Hi, am new here looking for advice. I have an 18 month old little girl who has recently started trying to climb in and out of her cot.... She hasn't succeeded yet but I'm scared she will hurt herself if she falls. She is currently in a cot bed, so I was going to take the sides off this weekend and see how she goes... My question is, is she too young? Hubby seems to think she is, but I would rather move her now, then If she is going to fall, she has a shorter distance to fall if that makes sense?

So anyone else made the transition? Any tips to make it as pain free as possible?

Thanks :)

You could put a matress or duvet under the cot just incase she climbs out if you want to keep her in the cot. Or you could take one side off only but then you may need to keep putting her back in bed. I didnt move my dd1 until she was 2.5 but I know people who have done it much sooner. Entirely up to you Smile

We moved kids at 2 as ds was practically jumping out of the cot. We bought the spongy tiles for bedroom and put lots of duvets and pillows round the cot in case. Think anytime from 18 months is ok.

If you want to do it, then do. You can buy bed guards which help to stop them fall out. Having said that though I haven't moved either of mine until they were over 2, as if they could get out sooner they would always be in my bed, whereas when they are a bit bigger it's easier to persuade them to stay put.

Plus having a big girl bed in our house is a real event (you only get one when you are potty trained) and moving them sooner would take that away.

thanks for responses, I think will invest in a bed guard and see how it goes.... can always put bars back on I guess! x

Hi Jujo, I'm in exactly the same position but DD is only 16 months. We're going to take the side of the cot off I think and put cushions and padding down to start with and see how it goes. Don't know if you saw my earlier thread but there was a terrifying story of a climber-outer who took the cot with him. DD is like yours - any day now. She's already got her foot over the side ready to hoist herself out. I'd be really interested to hear how you get on!

hi babydollsmum, oh no I haven't seen that thread! but that sounds horrific!! I am going to wait til weekend, and remove bars. that way if we have a bad night of her up and down, I'm not a total zombie at work! lol x

Just a quick update... Moved her sat nite. Complete success!!! She loves her big girl bed! She hasn't got out in the night once. Even on a morning she waits til me or dh go in before climbing out.

We got a Lindam bed guard, and as the bed is a cot bed there is probably only about a foot of space that isn't covered by the guard, so don't think she could fall out. So any doubts, do it and see! X

Ooh that's really good to hear. Really hope our situation will be the same! x
