silent reflux help!!!

emz0909 · 02/07/2012 20:23

Hi everyone!

im new to this so dont no if ive posted in the right place?
I am at my wits end of what i can do!
My Lb was diagnosed with reflux at 4 weeks, however he wasnt really overly sicky and i thought he was more a silent refluxer (Has pretty much every symptom of silent reflux/reflux, bar the projectile vomiting).
The gp prescribed gaviscon and it made him constipated + gave us 5 hour screaming fits, so i took him off it.
He was on cow and gate 1, but i put him onto c+g comfort.
for a week or so there was virtually no sickness, but we still had the screaming after feeds and the coughing and fussing.
Now, he is being a lot more sicky and crying in pain, it really upsets me. I bought dentinox but that seemed to make the sickness worse, as the wind was bringing the sick up. i stopped using infacol when trying the gaviscon.
Ive now invested in colief to try to see if that helps.
when he was on stage 1 and infacol im sure he wasnt this bad, but i dont no if its because the reflux has obv got worse! he now suffers with painful wind and bottom wind which results in screaming!
i dont no what to do
i was thinking of changing to hipp organic, but i dont no what combination will help?
shall i change milk and just see or/and add colief... or add colief and gaviscon... or ask the gp for a thickener?
shall i go back to stage 1 and use just colief or gaviscon and colief..?
i saw 2 Gp's and all i got was he will outgrow it, so im pretty much alone
help needed pleaseee!!

My son has silent reflux. There are other medications available. My son takes ranitidine and domperidone, prescribed by paediatrician. If 2 gp's have dismissed you I would go in to see another if poss, with a bullet point list of what you have said above and ask directly for a referral to a paed to consider other medication. Oh, and it has to be urgent as he is in pain. Be direct, don't budge. Show them the whites of your eyes Smile
Fwiw my Ds is a different child on medication, smiley and pain free :)

Isitme1 · 02/07/2012 20:28

Wow.
That's how I remember it.
Has he been like this since birth?
If yes maybe milk intolerance?
Ask gp for domperidone and omperezole ( suspension not mups)
Discuss changing his feed
How's his weight?

Keep him upright after feeds for atleast an hour( maybe in burping position over shoulder)
In cot= reflux wedge. I used to use the cleva mama one I think.
Invest in sling/ carrier that helps keeping them upright.

Another thing, reflux and food allergies, particularly cow's milk allergy, often go hand in hand. May be worth considering soya formula to see if he is more comfortable? (Although my son was allergic to that too...)

Isitme1 · 02/07/2012 20:35

Most babies outgrow before 6 months. Then like 95% of the babies thar don't out grow by 12-16 months.
My ds is 2 in sept this is still story of my life!
He's now on omeperzole, domperidone and neocate advance as it's a broken down milk and Its the only milk he can digest. If you can try and get his meds and milk combo right before weaning then that's brilliant.
My ds has severe food aversion. Severe reflux. Slow gastric emptying and has gtube (tube fed) to help with weight.

If all else fails you can see dr mike Thomson. Google him. He does private and nhs. I recommend him.
He has helped my ds a lot.
He Is a peadiatric gastroenterologist.

I really hope that helps

Ask the GP about Nutramigen www.nutramigen.co.uk/
I tried different formulas and meds for my ds. He ended up being prescribed this.

Hes been like it since 2 weeks old, but was dismissed as colic!
Hes gaining weight beautifully, which i why the gps dont care as all i get it " as long as hes gaining weight its ok". and its not.
He also had a rash on his face and chest, and the gp said it was a virus Shock which made no sense as when i said he had it for 2 weeks he blanked me.
but the rash is still there, turned to more eczema now though.
ive thought he may have an intolerance, but i doubt any gp i see will even agree.
Ive started to do a diary of every little thing he does, and noticing he is coughing a lot and i can hear something coming up in his mouth and he swallows it :(

Ive got a raised carrycot, a swing, burp him over my shoulder everything possible to help! having a rough day today actually with 2 hours non stop fussing! bless my little man!

Thanks all for the advice! i have an appoitment next tuesday with the only decent dr in the surgery so i pray i get somewhere!! :)

This all sounds so familiar to me. Gaviscon did nothing for DD and she was much improved on ranitidine. The first gp I saw tried to do nothing and say she would grow out of it. i just sat there and pointed out that DD was in pain and asked him what he was going to do about it. I think you do have to make it clear to the gp you are nice and comfy in his / her office and not moving until something is done.

Hope you get somewhere.

emz0909 · 02/07/2012 21:08

I said to him that the gaviscon helped the sickness which is why i chose a thick milk so that it stayed down, but i still had the pain and all i got was a double box of gavison and lactulose!
Grrr. I think they all think were paranoid!
i dont no wether im coming or going. its hard trying to find the right combo which is why im debating another milk change and its only going to get worse i presume! arrr. i think ill be commenting on here a lot!
be warned ladies :)

Like some of the other posters, docs tried to say it was colic etc...ended up having to bring DD into hospital at 3 weeks old where silent reflux was diagnosed.Got Zantac on prescription, fed little but often-and it made all the difference. Dd is 8 months old now, and thriving.
Don't let them fob you off.And with the right meds, it gets an awful lot better. Good luck!

My son had silent reflux and cmp allergy and GP just kept fobbing me off because his weight gain was good until I ended up Ill myself because of the stress and worry seeing him suffer and knowing sonething was wrong bug not what. In the end I had to take my mum in to dr's with me and practically beg them to do something. As soon as I got referred to a paediatrician it was a totally different story and they were fab. My son was put on a special milk and given meds and the change was amazing (took a bit of tweaking to get the right meds combination but we got there). All I can advise is to push the GP for a referral and keep on at them until you get one. From what I have read on here and other forums most GP's are just not clued up on these things enough and it is not on to say 'oh he will grow out of it'. Yes, he most probably will but he shouldn't have to suffer until that time when there are effective treatments to help him. I'm so sorry that you are going through this, hope you get some useful support very soon.

Nikkim30 · 03/07/2012 18:46

I haven't read the other posts so sorry if I repeat. Keep hassling your doctor for stronger medication, omeprazole was the only thing that worked for us. I was told they don't like to give it out much as its expensive so you may need to push them.

emz0909 · 13/07/2012 09:49

Just to update all, i went to my dr who i trust and straight away prescribed me ranitidine and my boy is now on 0.3 ml twice a day! :)

however, its been 2 days but dont see much improvement. i know it does take a while to work though.
we have a check up appointment wednesday to see how hes getting on and i think the dose is quite low as my boy last time was weighed was 10pound 13.
he also said if the ranitidine doesnt work he will start to look at CMPI.
Thanks for the support :)

Push your doctor for other medication- omeprazole is the only thing that worked for us. Won't stop the sickness but will help the pain.
Good luck, I know that reflux is awful. X

RunningOutOfIdeas · 13/07/2012 13:59

Glad you are getting somewhere. There is a website that gives details of the dosage by body weight. Google cryingoverspiltmilk to find it.

liftthatup · 13/07/2012 15:54

Omeprozole and carobel thickener in milk. Transformed my ds overnight. We had been through gaviscon, enfamil, Zantac, Zantac and gaviscon combo before we got to the solution. Also you can get omeprazole in liquid suspension if you push the GP. It is much more expensive to make than tablets but is magic!!! Good luck cos silent reflux is hell.

emz0909 · 18/07/2012 20:23

been for the week review guys
and hes upped the dosage to 0.5ml x3daily.
mainly because the screaming after feeds has almost stopped and the coughs getting better.
he said to take him off ranitidine in 4 weeks for a week to see how he responds without it. what do you lot think of this?
he said that he will look into cmpi if things dont improve, but as he has partially responded to ranitidine he is going yo see how he gets on. if he suspects cmpi would he just prescribe milk or? not to sure on that process.
thank you!! :)

glad to hear the higher dose of Ranitidine is working, it has a cumulative effect so sometimes take a while to start working. Your dose was and still is quite low and it is also very weight sensitive, so you need to keep adjusting (increasing) the dose. Also, over time many babies develop tolerance to it so it stops working (it did for my DD even when she was on a max dose). Domperidone did nothing for her, but omeprazole worked and lanzoprazole was the best. I'd be causious about taking your dc off ranitidine suddenly, it is best to wean off gradually to avoid acid rebound (stopping after 4 weeks seems quite early imo).

It's very hard to see you DC in pain, but it does get better. DD started improving after 6 month and by 10 - 11 months she was off all her meds (at one point she was on ranitidine, domperidon and omeprazole at the same time as hers was pretty bad). Hang in there and don't be scared to push the doctors if you need to, don't let them fob you off. No baby should be left to suffer in pain only because they'll outgrow it eventually!

englishbreakfast · 18/07/2012 21:03

forgot to add, I found the Little Refluxers forum a great help in some of the darker times we had with DD's reflux. Check it out, there is lots of useful info and support there. www.littlerefluxers.co.uk/

emz0909 · 19/07/2012 10:20

thank you.
i thought that coming off so quick would cause some discomfort so i will reduce the amount then the number of times i give it him over a few days.
the dr said though that babies can be kept on it for too long when they dont need it.
but we have 4 weeks to see if he gets better or worse.
fingers crossed :)
