8 mo suddenly wants a dummy - after not having one AT ALL???

After 8 months of not wanting a dummy, DD is desperate for it to get to sleep.

She sucks away very happily on something she used to spit out. She goes to sleep using something that used to wake her up if shoved in her mouth.

I gave it to her because she was chewing so furiously on her fist trying to get to sleep it looked uncomfortable, and so I dug out the dummy. That was 2 days ago and now when she is tired nothing else will do.

She is teething so I'm sure that has something to do with it. But should I be ok with it? Is it just a phase? Should I take it away once she's done teething or be thankful that she has found a way of getting to sleep that is much less mummy intensive (usually lots of ssh sh pat patting)?

That's exactly what happened with DD, although I think she was more like 14mo. I gave it to her when she was teething thinking she might chew on it but she sucked straight away and hasn't looked back.

Personally I never wanted her to have one but it made a difference to her and now she only ever has it for sleeping (she's 2.2 now). She's showing no sign of being ready to relinquish it and because I'll do anything for an easy life I'm going along with it for the time being. She's not reliant on it for anything else and when she's old enough to understand the dummy fairy and when I have enough gin in the house I'll get rid.

I would go for the less mummy intensive sleep method!

Thanks Leo. I had all fingers and toes crossed that this would ring a few bells with someone. I had been quietly pleased that I'd never have to go through all the weaning off the dummy and hoped that you'd say it would pass once teething was done. But hey ho it the way it goes I guess.

Yep. It's just one more of those things you never thought you'd do as a parent!

I had to bin her milk bottles recently too because she was far too attached to them. I decided that if I'm giving in to the dummy she can at least live without baby bottles. She hasn't drunk milk since Hmm

Grin I wish I'd written down everything I thought I'd do as a parent a year ago, and compare now. I'd put money on 90% of what I thought I do being the opposite of what I am doing!

(she's got her dummy firmly in tonight BTW. Woe betide she who dare remove it... if you could prize it out as it feels like it's held in with concrete ).
