scary monsters

2.9 yo DS has recently started complaining about scary monsters in his bedroom as a bedtime delaying tactic. Fair enough I guess, as I'm sure I did much the same as a kid.

however, he has then gone on to screaming about ghosts and will run away crying 'scary scary fly' if he sees a fly (and we're talking any kind of fly, down to fruit flies Hmm), was screaming yesterday because the sun was shining through the lace curtains and making a pattern on the wall. We are doing what we can to reassure him, but we're wondering a) how normal this behaviour is, and b) where the hell has he heard about monsters and ghosts?!

(he has a 2 week old sister by the way, so his world has slightly tipped on its axis recently!)

My 2.10 year old went through a stage of really bad dreams and was scared to sleep in his room. We went in one night and I got very cross with the "monsters" and told them to get out and that seemed to work. Every now and then we talk about how mummy doesn't let monsters into the house and how we got rid of them.

He also used to freak out if the wind blew on him eye roll so we just put his hood on and that seemed to reassure him and calm him. We haven't had a wind outburst for a while so he's outgrown it.

Maybe give him a fly swat or something to shoo the fly with so he feels powerful against them?

Hope some of that helped!
(I do think its a stage if that helps!)

thanks, glad it's not just my silly child who behaves like this!!

I have just remembered a tip to make 'monster spray' in a spray bottle and scoosh the bedroom before bed to be rid of them - will maybe try that later! the anti monster spell is a great idea too, may use that when he's a bit older. we will make a fly swat out of cardboard later I think and give that a whirl. I know he just wants attention at the moment, but can't do much about it whilst his sister needs it too. :(

he does the freak out at wind too, and rain - you'd think it was undiluted hydrochloric acid from his reaction when rain hits his skin.

Monster spray thing was an excellent idea.
I had no problems until a very lovely GM taught them the saying sleep tight dont let the bedbugs bite. Went through weeks of terrified children crawling into my bed saying the bedbugs were coming.
My eldest would set off my middle even though they had seperate rooms, ( mainly by screaming at the top of her voice the bedbugs are coming ) but she was the most scared. We bought her a fairy door - it only cost a few pounds its like a little, resin sculpted perect doot that sticks on to the skirting board. We told her the fairies would come in and look after her every night and get rid of any bugs. This door has worked wonders the fairies also come in to check she's been good!

We have installed an 'anti-monster' light. It's actually an orange plug in night light. Dd fine now.
