Hello all I'm new to mumsnet and need some advice.... My 3 1/2 DD just doesn't ask any questions! she is a normal, very moody, three year old but has no interest in asking why or how? Her best friend is a boy and he is always asking questions and saying funny things, but she is just very accepting and basically not bothered about the things I have to tell her!
Oh maybe I'm just really boring!!
also
She is very good at pre school and loves learning new things but once at home she becomes naughty and will not tell me what she has done or who she has played with! is this normal?? I didn't think I would have a teenager just yet!!
Does anyone else have the same problems?
Thanks

I wouldn't worry too much. My dd was the same at that age and has only really started being more inquisitive in the last year (she's just turned 5). I think it's down to the child's character. My younger dd is 2 and is one of the 'why? Why? Why?' children and it's quite exhausting... Wink

Oh and dd1 still won't tell me what she's done at school while dd2 can't wait to tell me in some detail what happened in nursery.

does she answer questions? mine asks questions a good bit, but will not answer even basic questions - it's totally infuriating. If I am offering her something and she doesn't respond I assume that her answer is no. Maybe try asking questions in a more oblique way - or put them deliberately wrong (oh, so the giraffe is the one with the big grey trunk? or equivalent)

mine is good as gold at nursery and a little sod at home too

Ah thanks, your post alone makes me feel better! she is just not intrested! my 16 mo on the other hand will be a why why why child!! I get quite sad thinking that DD1 wont talk to me as she is quite out going in many ways but hey ho I guess thats just the way she is.... Thanks for the reply xx

It is totally normal for little ones not to tell you what they did at playgroup/school. Have you tried asking what was the nicest thing that happened today? That sometimes works for mine.

My DS never really asked questions at this age, he saved it all up till he was four. He is still doing it at five and a half. Yesterday he asked "What happens when space stops?" Grin and when I don't know the answer he says "But I NEEEEEEED you to know".

Thank you Humphreycobbler, that makes me feel a whole lot better! As much as I can imagine its quite annoying at times, I can't wait for her to ask questions like that! Thanks for your reply x

Definitely in agreement with the others - its totally normal!

My 3YO Dtriplets are still in the 'Why?' stage... it really is exhausting! They aren't silly though, sometimes they will ask 'Why mummy?' and then just start laughing! Or all 3 will just run round the house screaming 'Why? Why? Why? WHY?' - so I would say your DD is perfectly normal! Grin

She may just be naturally introverted or having an introverted phase, in which case there's nothing to worry about. If you're more extroverted it might seem worrying but I assure you, it will only become a problem if you make a big deal out of it. Ask her questions about her day, but maybe ask her later in the evening when she's had time to relax after school.

All that time she spends not saying anything, doesn't mean she's ignoring you or being moody. She might be busy observing things around her and thinking lots of interesting thoughts. Maybe she doesn't ask questions because she has the confidence that she can find out the answers herself by listening and watching carefully.

I am just as quiet now as I was as a little kid, and I still turned out self-confident and happy! Sometimes someone will ask me why I'm grumpy and I'll reply, 'I'm just relaxing my face while I think.' :)
