Can you co sleep with 15 month old with newborn in same room

Hello. My DC is due in 3 weeks and I have a gorgeous DD who is 15 months old. The thing is, she doesn't yet sleep though the night and more often than not ends up in bed with me whilst DP sleeps in spare bed. I intend to breastfeed the new baby and will have it in a cot in my room for at least six months.

I am concerned that my daughter will not sleep through me BFing and changing the baby in the middle of the night. Does anyone have experience / advice?

well ihave done this, with a toddler bed in our room for the elder child tho they often ended up in bed with me and the baby, i just made sure i was inbetween the two of them iyswim?

and most of the time they slept through the feeding and nappy changes, i changed by torchlight, would hold a torch in my teeth! and used those baby nighteis so no poppers to undo/do up. there was the odd occasion when the toddler would wake up, but if they did i resettled them or got dp to take them to another room to sleep if they really wouldnt settle, but most of the time it was fine actually :)

my age gaps are not as small as yours tho.

Thank you. Good to know I am not being completely crazy. My HV says my only choice is controlled crying but I find it too heartbreaking so I am trying to work out alternatives.

My mum reckons (based on her own experience of four of us) that at some point my older one will become ready to go in her own bed so I'm hoping that this might only last a few months to a year. What do you think?

Torchlight? :) I might get one of those headlamps LOL. Baby nighties is a very good idea. Where did you get them from? I haven't seen them in shops...

like you i couldnt do cc! and yes your toddler will get to the point where they want to be in their own bed, mine all did! well my littlest is 18mths and still in with us. we have a futon so our bed is low down so no worries about baby/toddler falling out an dthe toddler bed is the same height and pushed up against one side of the bed, so they are close enough for a cuddle etc, it works fine for us, 13yrs of co-sleeping with one of more babies/toddles it will be very odd once my dd goes into her own bed!

yes a healight torch is great! and the baby nighties are often called bundlers! you can get them in john lewis, also from green baby tho they are expensive look out for their sale.

mothercare sometimes do them as well, will try and find a link for you :)

www.johnlewis.com/230591844/Product.aspx here you go, this one is plain white but in my john lewis they do patterned ones with stars etc, not that it matters!

mothercare sold them in pack sof 2 in their shop, they came on a hanger and were just in with their newborn stuff, not a packet. but i cant find them on their website!

My 3 year old often ends up in our bed and is very rarely disturbed by night feeds or changes. I use the light of my kindle or a torch app on I phone.

Btw- I bought some of those baby bundlers and ds didn't like them- he seemed to much prefer having his legs in a babygro than floating free inside the bundler (even with socks on!)

IceCreamCastles · 26/06/2012 11:47

I can send them to you if you like- 2 John Lewis ones.

5madthings · 26/06/2012 11:51

aww how lovely of you icecream i would have offered but i gave them to my sister for when she had her baby recently!

oh yes the torch app on a phone is what i have used for night time feeds and changes as well! forgot about that.

mammiebee · 26/06/2012 11:51

IceCream, that is so very kind. Then we'd be able to test them out. I could give you some money for them. How do I give you my details privately?

Ahaaa, my Kindle light would be perfect. Haven't got me paws on a new-fangled smart phone yet...

Pm me your address (click on message poster) and I'll send them on - don't worry about money - they were about to go to the charity shop anyway.
