8 month old not interested in reaching for toys

My 8 month old DS is not really interested in reaching for and playing with toys. Is this normal?

He has always had strong legs and is more interested in bashing the floor and any toys with his feet whilst he sticks his fingers and thumb in his mouth. He very rarely reaches for anything and doesn't show more than a passing interest in physical toys. He rolls really easily and would be crawling if he realised that he needs to do something with his hands as well as his legs. He seems very alert and doesn't sit still, always looking around, and described as a real wriggler.

I just wonder if I should be in any way concerned or if there is anything I could try to get him more interested in using his hands rather than his feet.

@Junal our daughter started reaching for toys around 8-9 months. She’s almost one and can’t crawl yet or sit on her own for very long. I’ve heard back from another parent on here and their child had some sensory issues with no other delays. Unfortunately we have a different issue. Our daughter is suspected to have cerebral palsy and we have an MRI scheduled in 4-6 weeks. Her birth was traumatic (prolapsed cord) I Can update after mri.
Good luck.

My son is 6 months and is not reaching for anything except for his bottle. I would greatly appreciative your update. Thanks!

I have the same issue with my baby.I am worried about him .Did you got the mri result? plz reply

Rox14 · 27/08/2020 13:53

I just want to ask to what extent your babies aren't reaching out?
My baby is almost 7month and I'm worried about the same issue. She can however sit up by herself and she can roll.

She will sort of touch her toys if they are right In front of her but if say she was laid down and I dangle one she doesn't reach at all to get it. She's excited by it and follows its movement but unless I physically put something in her hands she doesn't go to grasp.
Same with eating. Absolutely loves her food but doesn't even try to pick up a spoon. If I put a melty puff in her hand she'll just stare at it and drop it.

@Mey888 yes we did get mri results. Unfortunately there is some brian damage and it’s most likely from her birth.

Knowing our birth story and her delays I knew there was something wrong and had to push to see neurologist. Our Pediatrician really was nonchalant about it but I knew something was wrong.

If your little one is meeting other milestones then I wouldn’t worry! I know it’s hard to do.

@Mukshu I am having the same issue with my 8 month year old. She won’t reach for anything at all. Do you mind updating me on how your little one is now? Thank you

@Mukshu thanks for the update. I am hoping it is nothing to worry about but we will see I guess!

Hello mommies.
my 7month old baby is not interested in his toys, is not sitting up yet and not rolling either.
He feeds well and plays well with me.
Sometimes, he avoids looking at me and acts like he is zoned out. He puts him hands in his mouth all the time and usually hand his palm in a fist.

His pediatrician recommended Early Childhood Intervention and they want to start occupational and physical therapy for my baby.

Has anyone experienced same?
Please I need answers on what to do to help my baby and what to expect.
Thanks in advance.

scrabbledabbl · 21/01/2023 23:54

Don't worry my daughter had no interest in toys until she was 3.5!

Chidera · 22/01/2023 03:22

That’s great. Thank you

Momtobub · 11/11/2023 18:54

@Chidera hi there! Any update on your child’s developmental progress? Did he start reaching out to toys? I have a 7 month old ans currently in the same boat as you

Fulltimegoogler · 17/01/2024 15:04

@Momtobub hey, can I ask how your baby is doing? Mine is 7 months and doesn’t seem to know he has arms!

Firsttimemom0921 · 13/06/2024 01:54

@Fulltimegoogler my son is trying to roll but not able to fully lift his head and has not discovered his hands, does not reach out to toys, keeps hand in the mouth, progress seems to be slow. Any update on your end?

Nursenicole911 · 13/06/2024 01:59

There are milestones that every child needs to reach to be on track if he doesn't do this talk to his pediatrician . does he have object permanence ? if you show him a toy and then hide it does he look behind you for the toy ? he may be delayed but you should check it out especially if hes your first . at 1 they walk at 2 they talk.....

Oh and has been referred to audiology and ophthalmology too. Referrals coming out of our ears in this house.

How is your baby now. My baby is like this and all referrals in few months time

Rhina · 31/12/2024 19:39
