I swore i'd never worry about this sort of thing but hey ho! Just need a bit of reassurance I think.

DD is 17 months. She babbles and chats constantly, and clearly understands what's going on around her. She has very few recognisable words however: 'mamma'; 'daddy'; 'dare' (there); 'bye'; occasionally 'hiya'; 'mam' which seems to mean more or I want. She also says 'Erm' a lot in exactly the way an adult would.

DS had loads of words at this age which is why I've noticed that she doesn't I suppose.

I'm worrying over nothing, yes?

Thanks!

This is a good site where you can check what they sould be doing at different ages. Sounds fine to me but I'm no expert.

Its important to check she is understanding what you say as well as what she can actually say herself. Although at her age that is still pretty limited.

Health visitor will probably tell you to wait and see til she is two.

My dd is nearly 23 months and she babbles and chats to us and herself alot. It is not understandable though but she totally understands everything we say. She communicates with us in other ways too but i definatley would not say you have anything to be concerned about just yet. We are going to wait until she is two and see how she is then.

Thanks for that - really helpful site.

She's apparently just added a new word -'wow!'

Yes! You are worrying over nothing! Wait another 5 months or so and be surprised by how many words she is saying.

yes don't panic otherwise its like watching a kettle boil, it'll seem to take foooooooreeeeever before she strings a word or two together (but when you look back you'll wonder why you worried....... and long for a bit of peace haha) Grin

That's what I thought - thanks for the reassurance!

Now when we reach the 'why?' stage, I suspect I'll look back on this as a lovely quiet time! Grin
