should I start potty training my son this weekend?

I'm wondering whether to just stop using nappies, put him in pants, and see what happens. If no progress over the weekend, go back to nappies. If some progress, over to the nursery to continue the good work (tee hee). What do you think? Am I mad? He's 2y4m, doesn't have all GF's signs (only just getting interested in his clothes and nappies often wet); but he's very big and the nappies are getting a bit small! Don't want to go to pullups because they are so much more expensive.
I shall sit back and await your wisdom...

JanHR, that's fantastic. Can I ask is your dd your eldest or has she seen older siblings using the potty/toilet. I ask because I left my dd till she was 2y 6 mo before I attempted training properly but I have a 15 mo and would like to do it a bit earlier with him. Thanks. I

She is my 1st child. We bought the potty in september after she practically dragged her grandad up the stairs to change her bum after filling her nappy.. He was looking after her while I was out for the afgternoon.

What a star! She is practically training herself. Don't think my ds will be that eager but gives me hope, thanks

This is just the thread I need! DS (2yr2mths) definitely knows the potty is for a wee and will do one before his bath every night. But has no idea about his poo. This pm, about half his wees went in, and about half went on the floor/chair, while his big boy pants caught the poo. Then he refused to sit on the potty and went and peed under the kitchen table instead - grrr. Does this sound worthwhile pursuing, or should I wait for a bit longer?

I'm in a real quandary now. Ds has been doing quite well with the potty - no accidents at all yesterday, and 4 wees and a poo in the potty. Then today - disaster. He only managed 1 wee in the potty, and 1 poo, but about 6 accidents. Should I wait a while - he doesn't seem to recognise at all the urge to wee, and I think the weeing in the potty is coincidental. Any advice?

PS - He's 2.6

DD1 (then 2,9mths) decided she wanted to use the potty 3 days after bringing dd2 home from hospital and saw me changing her nappy. I had tried numerous times without success in the past. She was dry by day within the month. I'm hoping things will be quicker with dd2 but am certainly not planning on using this extreme method next time round

Aargh! well, tried for a week but no progress at all - at least, i got quite good at putting him on the pot every hour, and he did progress to generally holding on for about an hour - but he never asked to go, frequently weed at c.55 minutes, and poohed his pants 2/3 times a day. He just seems totally unaware in advance - or maybe just can't be bothered to do anything about it? Nursery got a bit shirty about the pooh when there was no progress after a full week, so we've given up and gone back to nappies. He still doesn't tell me when hes got a dirty nappy, would sit in it all day if I didn't smell it and change it! Do I wait for him to show some interest, or do I try again when its warm enough for him to run round naked outside?

Think I would wait - 2.4 is quite early for a boy, although there are exceptions, and you have given it a real try. ds was similar when I tried him at that age and didn't really decide to do it until 2.8 by which time it was winter. Even then he would have sat in a poo accident as it never really bothered him.
