4 month old with possible reflux

DD2 is 17 weeks old and had a cough for 7 weeks. She only tends to cough when she's asleep.
From newborn she would cough and sometimes wake hourly. We had a few weeks where she was up once or twice in the night for feeds and not coughing but now she's up coughing every night 4 or 5 times and has been for weeks.
Doctor is suggesting it may be reflux... But she's gaining weight well and used to be very sicky but this is improving. Doc says that if it's mild reflux then the good weight gain would be normal even if it was reflux.
My question is to anyone with experience, does this sound like reflux? And if so, am
I in for the long haul with these numerous nights wakings? I'm exhausted!
Doc prescribed gaviscon but this seems hit or miss with regards to how often she wakes.
I also have a 19 month DD so I'm very busy in the day and utterly exhausted... The thought of this going on for months on end makes me want to cry!

Hi

Doesn't sound like it to me, from the symptoms you describe. My son had severe reflux - lots of throwing up, but even babies I knew who didn't vomit had the same key symptoms:
they cry a lot
they arch their back stiffly and scream in a high pitch
their tummies feel stiff and bloated
they want to be picked up all the time because they're more comfortable in an upright position.

If she has these symptoms too it's possible.

Go back to the GP. Don't want to alarm but I've heard of cases of whooping cough recently - which I didn't even know still existed but it's been going round local schools and some Olympic athletes even have it.

I really hope it resolves. Have you tried putting a humidifier in her room, and raising the top of the mattress so she sleeps more in a sitting position? (You put telephone directories or pillow under the mattress, so there's no danger of smothering.

My DD is nearly 4 months and has mild reflux, after lots of reading one of the symptoms is her coughing, she doesn't cough that much to be honest but it's just another symptom to add to the list. She is very sicky and almost seems to choke on liquid in her throat at times. She doesn't always cry during feeds.

We had gaviscon - one dose in her 5-6oz bottle didn't do much, 2 doses worked really well but completely bunged her up and made her completely miserable.

We've abandoned the gaviscon now and she seems to be improving a bit - dr said some babies suffer until they are 1, but majority suffer for a few months. I'm hoping that When she starts sitting up on her own this will help the stomach muscles!

Thanks for your replies ladies... We are going back to docs soon do will mention about the whooping cough.
We too have found Gaviscon has bunged up DD and as she's breast fed its so difficult to administer by syringe.
Guess we will just have to ride it outSad
