Nearly 6month old - not putting any weight on legs... Should I worry?

Hi that's it really. All my friends babies of same age are standing for short toimes with support but definately putting some weight on legs.

When I try with my dd her legs just collapse. She won't bear any weight at all.

I had some worries about possible hip problems as 1 leg clicks sometimes and she has uneven creases. I took her to gp who moved her legs around and said all was fine. I thought she would need an X-ray to check if hips ok but he seemed happy.

Any advice/ experience? Thank you.

I wouldn't worry. All babies develop at different rates. DS has always been fiercely strong and determined, so much so, he was pulling himself up on furniture before he could sit properly! But my cousins little boy is 11 months and is making no effort to use his legs for anything!!
Don't worry! X

No. No worries at all. Some children love to stand, others don't.

Hi, yes I personally would get this checked at least with the HV if you are worried. Babies do all develop at different rates and I have a friend whose daughter did not put any weight on her legs til a year - running around happily now, no issues she was just later doing it. But I would just see the HV, either she will reassure you or can refer you if she has any concerns. Or see a different GP within your practice.

Neither of my ds's stood at that age and dd1 (7mo) doesn't now.

The ds's both crawled around 7 mths and walked around 14 mths which is pretty normal. Some babies just aren't interested in doing it but in my case at least, it made no difference to developing normally.

Personally, if a GP thinks its fine I wouldn't bother with a health visitor, but then I have a pretty dim view of HV in general.

While I don't think this is a wory in itself, I would ask for a second opinion if your instinct tells you something is wrong. You need to put your mind at rest, chances are it's nothing but better to have it checked. I don't remember what DS was doing at 6 months, but he is very independent, he was the only baby I know who refused to walk supported and who didn't sit up properly until he was 9 months, when he did it himself. Your DD might wait until she is able to pull herself up to standing, but as I said asking for a second opinion wouldn't harm.

PullUpAPew · 19/06/2012 12:45

There is a difference between not standing independently and not bearing any weight on the legs when held.

My ds2 didn't bear weight on his legs until he was about 14 months. He was a bit later walking (20 months) but is fine now. Unless you're not reassured by the GP's advice then I'd not worry about it.

StarMeKitten · 19/06/2012 13:16

My DD wasn't weight bearing with her legs at this age either - I don't think she did til about 9 months. She's a late walker though - 17 months now and just on the verge of walking!

If the Dr said its fine then I wouldn't worry at this stage. When we had the 9mth check up with HV she asked about it then (luckily my DD had just started doing it). Some babies just aren't interested in being on their feet at this age!

My 5 month old is the same but he's 20lbs and much taller than his counterparts, so I think he's just not strong enough yet...

He can however sit unaided, eat anything presented, sleeps 13 hours at night, and is generally very aware and happy, so I guess they just develop at different times. I'd wait a bit longer before worrying too much.

P.s we got a jumperoo recently which has made him much stronger and is like his "gym" - they're expensive but it's our best investment so far ;o)

Hi, was your little one alright in the end? In a similar situation! X
