What time does your 2.5 year old go to bed?

Just wondering what time you dc go to bed?
Dd1 is 2 and 5 months and I out her down at 730pm. Recently though she has been chatting in her cot until after 9pm and then wakes around 7ish in the morning? I feel 9 pm is far too late for her to go to sleep and come late morning and lunchtime she is tired? She does still nap at oneish for anything between one and 2 hours? Dh says its time to drop the nap! But am not convinced she could manage without it. But a 9 pm bedtime is unsustainable!
Just wondered what your dc of this age do and whether they still nap.

Ds is exactly the same age and sleeps from 8.30 pm until 6 to 7am. He has a 2h nap.

Ruthchan · 18/06/2012 13:36

Both my DCs stopped napping soon after their second birthdays. I too thought it was rather early, but it did help them to sleep at night.
They are now 5 and 3 and go to bed at 7:00.
However, with the summer and the light they are often still awake at 8:00 or even 8:30.
This happens every summer and I know they'll go to sleep more quickly in the autumn again.

Girlsville · 18/06/2012 13:48

Tugamommy - do you think 830 is ok for them to o to sleep?not too late?
Rutchan! Interesting point about light summer nights.

My preference is o keep the nap as I also have a 14 month old who sleeps in cot for 2 hours at lunch so I need the break and we would be stuck in anyway while dd2 sleeps. I genuinely don't think dd1 can cope or more than a couple of days without a nap but if her bedtime gets even later will have to see....

Ds1 used to nod off about 7.30/8 at that age, but ds2 is about 9ish.

Both got about about 7.
I figure they'll sleep when they are tired!

Flisspaps · 18/06/2012 13:52

6.30pm - sometimes 7pm if we're late with her bath. She's asleep within 10 minutes, and stays put for 12 hours. No naps since she was 21 months.

If we try to keep her up later (to go out or for a special occasion) she has a total meltdown, it's like a switch goes off.

Flisspaps · 18/06/2012 13:55

I will add that DD dropped the nap herself, I'd have liked her to keep on! It's all well and good your DH saying make her drop the nap but he isn't the one dealing with a cranky toddler in the afternoon then, is he?

emsyj · 18/06/2012 13:55

DD was 2 last month and has now dropped her daytime nap Sad. She goes to bed around 7.30pm (although can stay up later without getting too grumpy - no later than 8.30pm though) and wakes any time from 7am to 8.45am!

Sometimes I don't know what time she has woken as she will chat to her teddies or get up and read a book until she hears us get up (we don't have a monitor any more so she has to shout or cry for us to hear her, and she rarely does this in the morning).

MousyMouse · 18/06/2012 13:58

dc 2.6 sleeps
8:30pm to 7-7:30am (no daytime nap)
9:30pm or later to 7-7:30am (with 1 hour afternoon nap)

MNP · 18/06/2012 13:59

2.3yrs and down at 8, asleep by 8:15-30 and up around 7:30, no nap as even 45mins was leading to a 10pm bedtime.

Girlsville · 18/06/2012 14:01

Thanks everyone - looks like her sleeping is fairly similar to others of her age which is reassuring

Flisspaos - exactly! I've told dh he is not the one at home with fractious dd1 and tired dd2 in the afternoons! So I will be the one to decide about naps!

If he naps for 30-45 mins, he goes to sleep at about 8.30 (sometimes 9). If he sleeps for 1.5 hours, it'll be 9.30 - 10.00. He wakes at 7.00am. He's 2.5 y.o.

You could try shortening the nap - 45 mins is usually one sleep cycle.

parched · 18/06/2012 14:51

DS is also 29 months. He's never been a great day time sleeper, so has around an hour at 1.30ish. I put him down at 7-7.30ish and it takes him about 20 minutes to drop off (though sometimes longer). At nursery, he rarely has his nap but my experience is that not sleeping in the day leads to shorter or interrupted nighttime sleep. As suggested by others, you could try cutting the nap short.

lolalotta · 18/06/2012 22:02

We have recently been through this exact same thing, my dd is also 2.5 and used to nap for 1.5 hrs at lunchtime but she was taking longer and longer to settle off in the evening. I feel it is important she is asleep by 7.00pm so I shortened her nap to 40 mins and it has done the trick she is settling off happily again at 7.00pm. Her room is blacked out too which helps in the summer months. I think you have to decide what is most important to you regarding a break at lunch etc. for me personally I wanted to reclaim our evenings! Smile

Iggly · 19/06/2012 08:38

I've been thinking about this issue too! Ds has 90 mins sometimes more at nap time and falls asleep at 7.30-7.45pm. No matter how tired he seems. I'm keeping the nap but will wake him at half 2 as he definitely needs it and will have to bite the bullet and put him to bed later. It's a bit of a pain though as his younger sister goes to bed at half 6/7 so difficult to coordinate the rest of their days wrt meals as she is tired earlier in the day.

blondieminx · 19/06/2012 08:50

My DD is 2.5. Me and DH both commute so bath time is 7.30 then she has milk and stories, she goes to bed at 8.20-8.30 and is usually sparko by 8.45. She wakes up at 7ish fairly easily but if we let her, will cheerfully sleep till 8 which is great at weekends! Grin She has a nap of about 30 mins - an hour at lunchtime. But if she's slept in she has a shorter nap and will only snooze for around half an hour before she wakes up full of beans ready for the afternoon!

duchesse · 19/06/2012 08:57

DD3 (2.9) goes to bed at 8:30-9, and sleeps till 6:30-7 with a 1.5 hour nap. No nap and she sleeps exactly the same time but wakes up more often at night and is very tired and crabby.

Girlsville · 19/06/2012 11:14

Thanks everyone, its clear that 2.5 i that funny ag where they dont need as much sleep as previously. yesterday DD1 was up from her nap by 2.20pm (unusual) and then only chatted in ot till 8pm which was better.

Also wondered if anyone else had experienced with their dc of similar ages suddenly waking in the night seeimng scared etc? DD1 previously only woke at night rarely, and if she did moaned for a few mins and settled herself. In the last week she has woken every night screaming and screaming alling for us....no idea whaTS CAUSING IT BUT AM exhausted and she is incredibly fractious and not herself in day, I am tired and my patience wearing thin, and dd2 is 13 months and becming more demanding too!!

MousyMouse · 19/06/2012 11:16

yep, previously dc would just get up in the night and get in bed with us if she woke up.
now she sits in her bed and screams instead Confused

Girlsville · 19/06/2012 11:28

ahhh! its not an easy age! Hoping to get both dds down for a long nap soon so i can have a rest! am sure tahts pepetuating evrything but am tired and need a cup of tea!

I'm in the same boat with the late bedtime and waking once or twice during the night.

If she doesn't go down for a nap, she'll fall asleep at the table. I wake her at 2pm so she has 1.5 hours. Then she goes to bed at 8pm and messes until 9pm. DH stays with her until she falls asleep but I think this is the reason why it takes her so long as she has an audience.

Daylight savings time wrecked our routine and I never got her to bed at 7.30pm.

She's up at 6 - 7am usually.

I'll sorely miss the naps when they're gone.

ZuleikaD · 19/06/2012 12:21

DD goes to bed at 6, chats till about 7.30 and wakes around 5.30-6. She has a nap still at lunchtime - up to three hours.

Iggly · 19/06/2012 13:09

I sit with ds until he sleeps. Makes no difference - he just lies there biting his nails otherwise.

His latest trick is getting out of bed and leaving the room if we don't stay Hmm
