help - 3 children under 2 with reflux

I have 22 month old and 5 week twins, all have been diagnosed with milk allergy and silent reflux. God knows if it is hereditary but makes live even more challenging. I'm happy I've found the right treatment but would love to find other mothers with similar issue to keep me sane. Live seems to revolve around feeding, soothing discomfort and feeding. Horrible towards the end of the day when one of my twins is very uncomfortable.

My youngest son (now 14 months) was diagnosed with lactose intolerence and reflux early on and it was a terrible time with all the crying and screaming - and that was just me :o We used SMA lactose free and baby gaviscon and gripe water and infacol and everything we were told to try but he was still in pain.Recently we have been told it's a milk allergy and we use wysoy formula milk and check every ingredient on food packaging for hidden milk. He has improved enormously but it took time to settle. As the weeks went on he improved slowly but surely and now he's pain free. Things got even better when he was weaned. But I really understand the frustration of not being able to comfort them. Keep up the carrying and back rubbing and things WILL improve soon.

OMG! All 3 of mine have had varying degrees of reflux, but never at the same time! I know that my life changed imeasurably once I got them on the right medication (ranitidine), at the right dose (the maximum!) I guess at least with all 3 of them being allergic to dairy, you can just remove it from your house. I had DD2 trying to drink DS or DD1's milk, and then getting cross when I took it away from her.

My thoughts are with you.

Good grief, oh gosh, I really don't know what to say other than have a big Wine

Do you have hydrolysed formula (e.g., nutramigen or similar) or are you BF and doing dairy exclusion yourself?

babyjames · 15/06/2012 21:08

Goodness I feel your pain. My DS is now 2.4 and has grown out of his intolerance. He had reflux and intolerance to milk protein. I breast fed with dairy exclusion. We did try to wean onto nutramegen but he would not take it or drink from a bottle. They were very difficult days and I hope you get something sorted for your sanity and DCs comfort really soon.

Do you have any help you can call on? Parenting twins is never going to be a walk in the park. Parenting kids with reflux/ milk allergy can be incredibly difficult and totally unlike parenting children without these problems. Big hugs.

Hi, sorry to gatecrash ... My dd1 had reflux which was better when she was medicated, and things got better when she was weaned (at 4 months on advice of consultant). Hang in there and accept any help you can get from friends and family.

I now have dd2 (2 weeks old) and think she may have silent relflux ... I am bf, someone mentioned cutting out dairy - I've not heard this before, should I give this a try? Is it supposed to help? How?

Clutching at straws and have impending fear that my dd2 will be as unsettled as my dd1. Thankyou in advance for your experience and wisdom and sorry fir hijacking the thread < desperate emoticon>

The milk thing is because milk allergy presents in the same way as reflux - vomiting, feed refusal, screaming, poor sleep, etc etc etc. Cutting it out of your diet if BF ensures no stray proteins pass through from you to your baby via your milk.

Thank you all, after 4 months of hell wiith my eldest we found a great consultant cut out dairy used nutigrem (know ive spelt it wrong) and used losec after ranitidine didnt work so she stabilised. For new mums i went to 6 gps and visited A&E 4 times before sorting it. So am now much wiser' i recognised the signs immediately, both twins are on nutrigem and ranitidine. The pain goes but i know my next few months are going to be hard as the babies will need much more winding and they will still get attacks. My 22 month is playing up as jealous' my family live miles away and my husband will be travelling for the whole of next week. I have found A nanny type for eldest but you cant really leave babies with friends as the feeding especially winding is so tricky. Just wondered if there are any groups that can help or expert baby sitters anyone knows.
