What is an 8 month to 1yr development review for?

When dd was a baby they had cancelled what was the 7-9 month review for all children not deemed at risk. DD didn't have one as she isn't at risk.

DS has just been invited for an 8m to 1yr review. Just wondered what it was? Is it new? Developmental differences between an 8 month old and 1yo are vast, heck differences between one 8 month old an another are vast.

Just wondered what they're interested in. I shall take my red book along obviously and let the hv get on with it (she's lovely btw) but just intrigued as to its purpose.

weight/height to check growth.
are they sitting/crawling/weight bearing/walking dependent on age
are they pointing/babbling/saying any words/understanding
do you have concerns with hearing/eyesight
passing toys between hands
only takes about 10 mins

Hi my dd (almost 10 months) has just had hers. Hv came to the house ( so I did frantic tidying before she came Grin ). Basically she seemed to cover the same things as in the 8 month check that ds had 5 years ago.

She weighed and measured her and checked her hips. She also asked about stuff she was doing like banging blocks together, saying dada, and if she was crawling etc. She also asked about feeding and if I had any concerns.

I think they now call it 8-12 month review to give them a wider timeframe to visit everyone Wink our first one was cancelled due to staff sickness.

It was actually a lot more relaxed than I was imagining, I thought I'd get told off for not having stair gates up yet!

Good luck weighing ds. They tried a few weeks ago. He will NOT sit on the scales. He's 9mo and can walk and talk and is growing like a weed so I assume there's nowt to worry about. I like my hv and she has good biscuits and a whole selection of teas so I am actually looking forward to it. Might even remember to take ds with me.

We didn't have any hip checking or anything like that, height and weight were the only things looked at (although DD walked into the room - it was at the local surgery and at 12mo so wasn't necessary) rest was just asking if there were any concerns, and all the pretty obvious words/sounds/noises/activity etc.

I think the purpose is purely for a parent who is either worried, but doesn't want to bother the docs/services or is completely unaware that something isn't usual. For most it's just a box ticking thing all round.
