20 month old; alternating convergent squint, about to get glasses (slightly long sighted) any experience?

Wondering how I'm going to get her to wear the glasses firstly! We are waiting for the prescription to be filled.

Also if anyone has experience and if the glasses have worked or if surgery was needed.

One eye or the other will turn in especially when looking closer up. The long sight is not significant, and 'within the bounds of what is normal at this age' nonetheless the consultant wants us to try the glasses first. I don't quite understand it all yet! No family history of squints etc

Hi sedgieloo, just thought I'd let you know that there is a thread over in the Children's Health section of the site which has lots of info on this sort of thing - I think there are some squint specialists on there.

I also thought I'd add my perspective as a now 32 year old who has worn glasses since aged 2 and had operations aged 3 on both eyes due to alternating convergent squint. In my case, the squint is still very visible when I don't wear glasses/contact lenses but when I have them in you can't tell. I'm still very conscious of it but I remember that when I was a child I loved my glasses and didn't like taking them off! If your DD's consultant thinks it's worth trying glasses first and your DD isn't very long sighted they might well do the trick for her. Do you know why patching isn't being tried though? (It wasn't with me either, but I understand it can work really well to eliminate squint in some children.)

Thanks Surban, I have not been on that board before I will take a look. The patching isn't being done because (I think) one eye or the other will turn it is inconsistent so both eyes are being used and exercised and focusing but not at the same time...I think!?

That sounds right, I'm pretty sure that's why I never had patching. Sounds like your DD is pretty similar (although I was always, and still am, quite a bit more long-sighted in one eye than the other, which I think is why I had the ops). Good luck anyway, I hope your DD gets used to her glasses quickly!
