Worried 16 month old wont pull up to stand

My sisters dd is 16 months old and has been walking for the past 2 months, however she will not get up herself from lying or sitting position. So will walk if placed on her feet but if sat down will make no attempt to move or get up at all.

I am worried about this as is my sister, she seems to have little upper body strength and wont go up on her arms if placed on tummy.

I think she should either mention it to the doctor or health visitor but my sister says she is going to leave it and if she is still not doing it at 18 months then she will

Any advice would be appreciated

Will she use her arms to hold her weight in any other way?

Does she use them to catch herself if she falls?

Basically is this about not wanting to put her hands on the floor which could be sensory perhaps or an inability to hold her weight on her arms, indicating a lack of strength?

Thanks for reply. Not sure about putting arms out if she falls will ask sis tomorrow.

Don't think its sensory though as she loves getting messy plays in sand, glue etc

Does/ can she crawl?

welliebobs · 13/06/2012 22:09

No never crawled and always hated tummy time. If placed on tummy now would just lie there and cry.

Also if u put your arms out to her she will reach for then put not try to pull herself up using your hands for support if you know what I mean

So she can use them but chooses not to.

That makes me wonder if she is avoiding pain or discomfort by not using them to hold her weight.

I think I would see the GP and ask to be referred to a paediatrician. It is an unusual way for a baby to behave and your sister needs to find out why she's doing it.

Did she use a bouncer or walker or have someone walk her? And sit in chairs more than lie unrestrained on her back? Could be that she has learned the motions for walking before developing the core upper body strength which would usually come first if she'd rolled/crawled etc freely on the floor.

She did use a walker and a baby bouncer. Sister had bad pnd when baby was little and baby spent too much time sat in bouncy chair instead of rolling about on a playmat.

Sister lived in another country until recently so had little family support. And I feel that maybe baby didn't have enough stimulation and opportunity to play and develope as she should have had. ( Feel bad saying that) but feel it maybe relevent to why she has this problem now.

My DD3 is exactly the same, She's 13 months, loves walking holding one hand but wont crawl and hates tummy time. Just cries. She had reflux till 8 months old so didn't really have much tummy time.

My elder two didn't crawl for very long (about 3 weeks) before walking so I know it might be the genetics of my family. Many babies never crawl. In fact its not considered a developmental milestone because so many miss it.
