Is your 20mo no longer tired at bedtime?

DS used to settle very well and be asleep just after 7. Now it's closer to 8pm and he spends the previous 50 minutes whooping and jumping around his cot. The obvious answer is that he isn't tired enough, I suppose, but I thought toddlers needed about 1.5-2hrs sleep in the day still.
He's up at about 0640, is knackered by 1230 and I usually have to wake him at 2.15 so he has about 2 hours max.
What do you think? Should I let him nap 1230-1.30, thus cutting it short by an hour and which also makes for a scarily long afternoon or should I push his nap later, so again only an hour's nap but a shorter afternoon ie, 1.00-2pm? Dilemmas! I really miss having a peaceful evening.

they change all the time, and its us rusnning to catch up with them I find!! I would cut the day nap shorter whether its earlier or later, I found when my DS was your bubbas age he went to one nap as with 2 he was doing exactly the same (struggling with going down nicely at bedtime and waking early) as yours, so he dropped the afternoon nap and just had a late morning nap or just after lunch nap, I only allowed an hour and bedtime went back to 7pm asleep :) you'll probably find then a few months later the same happens so that you end up dropping the daytime naps altogether, mine is 2 and a half now and hasnt had a day nap since about 22m :) but sleeps 7-7.30/8 easily. best of lukc, I found that it only takes a week to set something as a 'habit'

Thanks Brightonbleach, I cut his nap by 25 minutes yesterday and he was asleep by 7.15pm. So I guess that's the answer. A short lunch break for me though... Sad

I'm going through similar with my dd who is almost 19months. Up until 3ish weeks ago she would go out like a light at 715 and sleep 12 hours. Suddenly she's started playing in her cot till about 8 or even like last night nearer 9. I was blaming her sisters for disturbing her but I don't think they do really. They're 6 so not ready to sleep till about 830 but I put them to bed with their books at 745 and they are pretty good at being quiet so as not to disturb her. I've moved her nap 45mins earlier today to see if that helps. Fingers crossed

Yes I've noticed this with my 20 month old. I try to get her down as early as possible, early lunch and asleep at noon. If though she sleeps in, in the morning this does not work. However if she is up by 2 or just cat naps a couple of times in the day whilst we are out and about I find she does not take ages to go to sleep at night.

yeah, when mine first started needing to cut down the naps I missed my 'break' as well but I wouldnt have it any other way now as although theres no downtime during the day we are 99.9% guaranteed an evening all to ourselves, we can even have a noisy dinner party and he won't wake up!! :)
