When to sit baby in the pram?

My son is 5 months old and all he wants to do is sit.

I have Phil & Teds pram (currently toddler&baby setting) and he really hates lying down in the back. He wants to be up and see what is happening in the world.

I was wondering if it would be safe for him to sit properly at this age yet?

I waited for 6 months before I did that, but sympathise, mine seemed to get restless from 5 months too. Could try putting him in a sling / Baby Bjorn type carrier a bit (though I know that gets heavy). Also try not doing long pram journeys for a few weeks - if that is practically possible.

I think if he wants to sit, and can sit, then let him sit. Is there a halfway point on the P&T or can he only lie flat or sit upright?

GnocchiNineDoors · 10/06/2012 10:08

Im sure he will be fine, as long as he isnt bolt upright. We have a Maclaren lie flat stroller with a soft cot in which dd outgrew at about 16weeks so she went into the buggy, sometimes flat, sometimes half sitting depending if she was awake or not.

gamerwidow · 10/06/2012 10:12

If he wants to sit and has the head control then let him sit. I had my DD sitting up (not fully but about 50-70% of the way) from about 12 weeks. She had reflux and hated laying flat on her back. As long as his head isn't flopping forward then it's fine.

FuzzzyDuckosaurus · 10/06/2012 12:19

I used my dd in maclaren stroller half sitting up when she was 3 months old. She was awake so figured if I sat her up, she could watch what was going on. Go for it!

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 10/06/2012 15:21

I think DS was around 4 months when we moved him out of the lie-flat pram into the pushchair attachment (albeit reclined slightly so he wasn't bolt upright and flopping over). He learnt to sit unaided at 6 months exactly

Sandalwood · 10/06/2012 15:24

When we got my DD a stroller (she's now 7, so maybe things have changed) we got one that said 'suitable from 3 mths' - it didn't have a lie flat option, so I would assume that being up a bit is completely fine.

Hmm... I've been wondering when my LO should come out of carrycot bit and go into pram bit, I assumed it was when she could sit up on her own... Which is slightly concerning as she's going to outgrow the carrycot very soon!!! (we have icandy strawberry... Not sure if that makes a difference or not!?!)

pumpkinsweetie · 10/06/2012 21:29

I moved my dc4 into bottom seat of p&t at 5 months as she didn't fit in the cocoon any longer and she seemed to do fine, just make sure you zip the seat down so its slightly tilted back and put a nice liner or cosytoe under her to make the seat more cosy

Lala29 · 10/06/2012 21:56

DD was moved out of carrycot at 3 months exactly. She wanted to sit up, so I figured why not. It was still reclined quite a bit, but she was a lot happier with that. We have an iCandy.

ceeveebee · 10/06/2012 22:06

I moved my DTs from carrycot to main seats at about 4 1/2 months. We have an iCandy peach and my DTS was just too big for the carrycot by that age (and he's between 25th and 50th centile). The main seats do recline right back though so no more upright than a car seat, and they both had good head control by then

Lexiesgirl · 10/06/2012 22:11

DD has been in a front-facing sit-up pushchair since about 14w. She loves it. She is very curious and has pretty good head control, but you can always buy a headhugger (if your pushchair doesn't have one) to help?

golemmings · 11/06/2012 07:22

We have a p&t too. DS is very long and outgrew the cocoon at 3mo and the flat bit at 4mo.

Because we also had a 2yo we were using the baby &toddler configuration and of course you can't reclines the top seat with a toddler underneath (although I think you can recline the bottom seat on some newer models -ours is an e3).

I felt that at 4mo, he was too young to be that upright (despits being a solid little chap with good head control) so we actually picked up another pushchair on preloved and used that with a buggy board for a month or so.

He would probably have been ok, but I was being a bit perfect second born with him.

rubybambini · 11/06/2012 22:00

At three months, into a Baby Jogger CM, with a padded insert. Prior to that, DD was in her Maxi-Cosi car seat, which perched backwards-facing on the pram with attachments. She was / is more a forwards-facing character, for example, she used to go nuts if we faced her to us in her carrier and not out.

MrsRV · 13/06/2012 11:07

Just following on... I read somewhere u shouldn't put suncream on babies before 6 months? If they go in pushchairs earlier than this and the sun actually does get round to shining I guess they just have to have suncream on....?

ceeveebee · 13/06/2012 11:36

Nope, I have a sunshade covering entire buggy with SPF50 protection. It also makes them sleep for longer, hurray!

Firsttimemummy1999 · 29/04/2023 11:49

Hi all,

my 2 month old wants to be sitting up and does have some control of his head. I sit him up without head support and like it and moves his head around for no more than a minute. He hates laying flat . Just wants to sit up or stand up. He can stand supported too.

what im saying is, can i put him in the pram pushchair slightly reclined . He just likes to see everyone and everything.

thanks
megan
