Playing with poo

DD is 2y9mo. She's been potty trained (daytime) for about 6 months (barring the odd accident). We moved her into a bed a few months ago (DC2 due in 3 weeks).

For the third night in a row, she's pooed in her nappy within an hour or so of going to bed and then called for us. She then shows us a little display of poo that she's arranged on her bookshelves... and asks for a new nappy.

Just before we moved her out of her cot bed, she had started sometimes throwing poo out of her cot in the mornings - one of the reasons we moved her, so that she could use the potty if necessary.

Some nights, she has taken off the nappy and used the potty properly, calling for help afterwards, so she does know how to do this. occasionally there have been smears on the wall - I think where she has been trying to wipe it off her fingers.

Obviously we encourage using the potty before bed, which she will sometimes do.

Any experience of this? Helpful suggestions of how to tackle it? At the moment we are being low key but disapproving.

She is a delightful child really...!

Get a popper nappy wrap, like this and put it over her disposable so she can't get it off.

And have some Wine, you deserve it.

belindarose · 08/06/2012 21:37

Can't have the wine, 37 weeks pg!

I do have some wraps. Almost certain she'll be able to remove them though. Duct tape round the nappy?

She doesn't take the nappy off though. Just sticks her hand in somehow and scoops it out. She did tell me (accurately) that there were 5 poos tonight, so glad she's practising her counting while being thoroughly revolting.

Try feeding her earlier and then, perhaps, a walk after dinner to get things moving before bedtime?

PrisonerOfWaugh · 08/06/2012 21:45

It sounds like a phase, and possibly one in reaction to impending arrival.

If you are able I'd just try and make as little fuss about it as possible. Let her help clean up and emphasise washing hands. Provide some wipes if necessary.
If she doesn't get a big reaction then the interest may well wear off quickly.

Well done her on accurate poo tallies though!

belindarose · 08/06/2012 21:46

Her, umm, bowel movements have always been somewhat unpredictable. Days without, then 3 in a day type thing. Maybe I could fit in a bit more activity before bed though.

Sorry - can't stop sniggering at the little poo ornaments!

Kids are a joy!

It's annoying when they poo at night. Would it be worth going in half an hour after bedtime (or keeping her up and mobile for an extra half an hour) until she has done her poo?

belindarose · 08/06/2012 21:47

Yes, we're big on washing hands (in a boring way). Let's hope the phase is short...

She does seem rather proud of her new ornaments!

Grin children are revolting. DS2 has started doing a version of this and he is 2.4. He has taken his nappy off twice now and poo'd in his bed, than called it 'cake' Hmm. We have now taken to safety pinning him into his sleeping bag. He is still in a cot, but it could still work in a bed provided you had a stair gate on the door.

GobblersKnob · 08/06/2012 21:55

Even pregnant women can drink virtual wine Wink

You can put the wrap on backwards, to make it hard to get off, but if she is just putting her hand in can you not just put her in a popper vest? Or would she undo that too?

I am counting my lucky stars neither of mine have pooed at night after the age of three months.

belindarose · 08/06/2012 22:02

Okay, I'll take a large glass of virtual red please.

She'd definitely get out of a popper vest (that just autocorrected to 'pooper'!).

Actually, she never pooed at night as a baby either. I never changed a dirty nappy in the night.

Oh, my eldest used to do that! His poo was always hard little marbles, and he used to line them up in size order on the bookshelf.

He did grow out of it - I used to do a Joyce Grenfell but never made a huge deal of it. I seem to recall losing the night time nappy was the key...

belindarose · 08/06/2012 22:10

I love the size order! DD did announce the other day, when looking into her potty, that there was a daddy poo and a baby poo and mummy was inside the daddy poo. Freud would certainly have had something to say about that!

BlushDs2 did this for the first time Lara night.... He is 2.2.
I was not happy, dragged him in the shower, detol-ed his bed, put all the bedding and soft toys in the wash...
I am now anxiously checking on him every 15 mins!!! And have decided to start the potty training (since he doesn't want to wear a nappy)
Sorry, my post is not helpful!!!

belindarose · 10/06/2012 19:48

Oh God, tonight's offering has been worse than ever. 5 little balls again, but soft this time (bleugh) and 'drawings' all over her chest of drawers. This was with a nappy wrap on, which had been discarded. Nappy itself still on.

She said, with bright eyes and a wide grin, 'I've been a naughty girl' as I entered the room (she's fond of this phrase, not one I actually use!). When I made her stay outside the room with DH while I cleaned up, she decided 'but it wasn't me mummy, it was just my finger that decided to do it'. Aaaaaaaaagh!
