How do you discipline your 2yo?

DC2 is a handful, constant hitting, nipping, scratching and hair pulling of older 4yo sibling. Every time we take them to one side, say no and ask them to apologise, but it's a constant cycle and nothing seems to break it.

How do you discipline yours???

Naughty step DOES work (although it took me a while to believe it).

The naughty step worked for DC3. It's not the answer for all children.

With a 2 yo, nothing will work immediately. In 2 years time he will get it, whatever method you choose to use.

Personally I would spend the next 2 years saying a very firm NO, and taking him away from the situation.

Some children have more empathy than others. Saying "X is sad" really worked with DC2. It's finding their thing.

Agree with the naughty step, you also need to be consistant with how you deal with it.

There is some great information on discipline on asksears and see if you library has got this book but anything by Dr Tanya Byron is good Smile.

Should have mentioned we do the naughty step too and she does sit on it, says sorry and 5 minutes later it starts again. No empathy either and laughs at us. Totally different kettle of fish to dc1.

Have you noticed any triggers, like tiredness or hunger?

extremum · 07/06/2012 14:02

Thing about the naughty step is you have to keep going back to it and back to it until eventually the message gets across. May not work with all children of course, but seems to work with most. It is a pain but worth it if it works.

Thanks for the link, just reading through now.

The only pattern I can see is that it's always her older ds and usually a squabble over toys.

How about a clearer toy-demarcation-line?

E.g. these toys in this box are for child 1 to play with, these toys in this box are for child 2 to play with, never the twain shall meet.

It doesn't promote sharing but at 2yo sharing is probably too much to expect anyway.
