At what age was your DC happy in a forward facing buggy?

DD is now 9 months, and is usually happy in a buggy facing me, but not when it faces away. Trouble is I have a forward facing mountain buggy which I like to use for country walks, but cannot at the moment as DD usually cries when she is in it. At what age was your DC happy to face forwards in a buggy? thanks!

ds1, never, he stayed facing me until he stopped using the pram at 2yrs old. he just didn't like not seeing me.

ds2, about 14/15 months he went into a ff buggy and was fine.

(sorry bout lack of caps, half my laptop keys are missing Blush )

We had a Mothercare one which only ever faced outwards so he never faced me even as a tiny baby. It would have been nice to see his face. However, now I've got a double (Baby Jogger City Select ) and he HAS to face me so I can fit the carrycot bit on the bottom. He's 18mo and never stops pointing at things and wanting to talk. I know it's cute but it's exhausting and sometimes I just want to have a break from him while I walk!

From about 5/6 months DS would strongly object (screaming/tears) if I set the push chair up so that he was facing me - so he started facing outwards.

Then between 9-14 months (my disastrous attempt to go back to work) he wanted to face me again.

Once I was back at home FT he was happy to face outwards again!

Dd1 wanted to face me until she was about a year old, when she stopped crying and attempting to turn round. Dd2 was fine turning around at 5 months. Dd3 is 6 months old and hasn't shown a preference so it depends what pushchair she's in.

Nevercan · 07/06/2012 15:15

6 months as wanted to see what was going on....

BabydollsMum · 07/06/2012 15:41

DD was just over 12 months I think and I only did it when it felt really natural and wasn't an issue at all. It coincided with her learning to wave at EVERYBODY, even if they were going the other way and didn't notice. :(

beela · 07/06/2012 15:56

About 2 months before I was ready to let him - I used to miss his little face looking up at me! :)

But DH pointed out that he was craning his neck around to see what was happening so we switched it but I still used to sometimes have him facing me when DH wasn't there sometime around 10 months perhaps?

Niceupthedance · 07/06/2012 18:03

14 months here. It seemed like a natural progression.

Janoschi · 08/06/2012 22:34

DD never really faced me. She had the option but was and still is a nosy bugger. She had a sling too. Now she's mainly in our backpack. Anything that gives a good view. She's 13 months.

DS faced me till about 9-10 months until my DM pointed out he was spending half the time craning his neck round to see where he was going... he's loved being forward facing since then!

mumblecrumble · 08/06/2012 23:49

DD was different I think - she loved facing forward from like 4 months or something..

But then she is socially quite forward now, in terms of she's happy to run half way accros a park to say hi to a man dressed as a chicken.... As long as she knows I am there and watching her.

We always chatted lots in the bugg thouhg, her buggy was quite conjusive to forward facing chatting.

LoopyLoopsCorgiPoops · 08/06/2012 23:53

It has never bothered either of mine.

ThisIsMummyPig · 08/06/2012 23:58

DD1 never
DD2 is two now and sometimes goes in forward facing, but I can't hear her speak and she gets annoyed, so 95% of the time she faces me.(or walks)

Wingdingdong · 09/06/2012 23:45

DD doesn't go in the buggy that much any more (2.10) but when she does, she has to face me. She wants the conversation more than she wants to see where she's going.

Buntingbunny · 10/06/2012 00:00

Never had anything else, so DDs didn't know it was something to be unhappy about.

Buntingbunny · 10/06/2012 00:01

Oh, but I always chattered away to them.

Napdamnyou · 10/06/2012 00:04

Can you attach toys? A mirror?

Napdamnyou · 10/06/2012 00:04

Or maybe put her in it in the house watching you while you do chores so she gets used to it?....

StetsonsAreCool · 10/06/2012 00:08

DD is just gone two and she chooses the buggy that only faces forward. If we do use the one that can face me, she prefers to face out. That's only been the last few weeks though.

For a Very Long Time she would only fall asleep facing me too.

I don't like not being able to hear what she's wittering on about, even though it's normally a dog/bus/wall/hole in the road/her feet and she doesn't really need a response from me anyway Confused

ELHasShutUp · 10/06/2012 20:24

DS started facing forward just after 5 months, as he grew too long for the carrycot. The first time we strapped him in, he couldn't stop laughing! A month later he still really enjoys facing outwards.

LondonCityGirl · 19/06/2012 21:57

At about 6 months DS switched to face forwards and he was very happy with it. Not only as he's nosy and could see what was going on better but also people talk to him way more when he's facing out which he likes.

suntodayplease · 20/06/2012 08:57

At 8ish months, although my DD is now happy either forward to rear facing. She tends to sleep better if facing me though - I must be boring to look at!

mistlethrush · 20/06/2012 09:03

We only had a MB so DS was forward facing right from the start (no carry cot attachment). I talked and sang to him quite a bit though. From as early as 4 months he was fascinated with watching the dog chase her frisbee - and I can remember watching him track her into the distance then back again with great pleasure.

I'm so glad he was facing out. He's such a chatterbox now - if the research that suggests they should be backfacing for language development is true, it would have been completely awful - I struggle to get a word in edgewise as it is Grin
