Straining when pooing

Hi all

My 10 month old has real problems pooing. He strains a lot, goes bright red and often with no success. Recently, when he has finally managed to poo, they are very hard and big - sorry to be graphic - but they are like an adult poo. I've tried giving him prunes, apricots etc but it doesn't seem to make a huge difference. I'm also trying to get him to drink more water but he spits most of it out...any ideas / advice welcomed...

thanks
H

Have you tried diluted orange juice in the water which helped my two

Has this been going on for some time or is it a relatively new thing? If it is a new thing then I would increase his water intake quite dramatically and give him strawberries, raspberries. You could also try lactulose for a short while to see if it helps (definitely needs a lot of water if you use that).

If it is an ongoing thing then see your gp, my ds has had problems with this for about 9 months now and we have been referred to a paediatrician. They have told us that prune juice is a waste of time, we were giving him lactulose but that didn't help either. He's now on movicol which makes his poo very soft/ not solid but he's still having difficulty.

Good luck, I know how distressing it is to see them in such pain.
