Sitting unaided at 19 weeks - when might he crawl?

Hi,

Just for fun I'd be interested to know how soon after sitting unaided your little ones first crawled?

I'm not bothered in the slightest in these silly milestones/percentiles, which seem to do nothing more than cause worry for us mums - I'd much rather hear from real people how long I might have left before I have a moving baby to chase after!

My son can now sit completely unaided at 19 weeks which I suppose is considered early.

Also any tips on baby proofing the house - I'm aware of the basics but any savvy ideas welcomed for keeping my son safe.

Thanks,

;o)

You might not want to hear this but I reckon we had about 3-4 weeks when DD would just sit still, she then started crawling and was in to everything!

We just got stair gates sorted quickly and moved everything up a level.

By contrast, my dd sat up unaided from about 17 weeks but didn't crawl until she was 10.5 months old. She finally crawled to get to a tin of chocolate biscuits at the other end of the room Grin

A month maybe? Having said that she was much later sitting unaided than her NCT peers but then completely overtook them in the crawling and walking stakes. I don't think you can second guess it really.

My son sat unaided at 14 weeks. He was stable by 16 weeks. He then didn't crawl till 8mo and did his first steps at 11mo, walking properly at 13mo. So it's a bit random and unpredictable, I think!

Fantail · 05/06/2012 00:37

DD was sitting well at 24 weeks, didn't crawl until 9 months and walked just before 13 months.

FoofFighter · 05/06/2012 00:40

I have to admit I cannot recall how old my DD was when she sat unaided Blush but she was proficiently crawling at 6.5 months and walking at just a few days over 8 months old.

exexpat · 05/06/2012 00:44

Mine were both sitting unaided by four months (17 weeks or so) but still didn't crawl till nearly eight months, and both started walking a week before their first birthdays.

I found it rather odd that they were born four years apart, different genders, very different in many ways, but passed a lot of physical milestones at exactly the same time.

About four months between sitting and crawling for DS. And man alive did he get angry when he couldn't get around.

gnocci · 05/06/2012 08:14

DS sat around at the same time, crawled well by 7m and walked well by 9m. Good luck!!!!!! Grin

MirandaWest · 05/06/2012 08:15

DS sat for about a month before crawling.

DD sat for 4 months before moving (wasn't crawling - she didn't crawl until about 2.5 IIRC).

Both DC walked at 15 months.

BornToFolk · 05/06/2012 08:17

DS sat unaided at just before 6 months and crawled....never! He was so happy sitting he did that for months before working out how to stand and cruise at about 10 months and then walked at 13 months.

Pochemuchka · 05/06/2012 08:17

My son rolled at 2 weeks (yes!) sat unaided at 14 weeks and pushed himself up to sitting at 21 weeks but the lazy beggar didn't crawl until 6+ months, by which time all his peers were crawling! (he bumshuffled for a wee while)
He walked at about 11 months and has been a total menace since! The longer they can't move, the better! Grin

GobblersKnob · 05/06/2012 08:18

Can't remember sitting but dd could creep at 4.5 months and crawl at 5.5 months, she started while we were camping, it was a nightmare she was so tiny.

She then decided crawling was the method of motion for her though as she didn't walk until she was 17 months Grin

QueenOfTheMadhouse · 05/06/2012 08:20

My son could sit unaided at 4 months, he didn't crawl till he were 7 and a half months, then walked at 9 months.

Pochemuchka · 05/06/2012 08:26

As for baby proofing - DD was a dream and never went for anything she shouldn't. DS, on the other hand is into wires, plug sockets, pulling things down, climbing up things, banging things, opening cupboards, drawers - you name it! Wait and see what sort of child your DS is when he can move as (in my opinion) it's best to leave the house as normal as possible. The only thing I did with DD was socket covers and locked away detergents/bleach etc. as she wasn't interested in anything.
Oh, those sharp corner covers have saved a few head bumps.
With DS I've put locks on all cupboards/freezer/toilet(!) and put most things away!

wheniwasoneihadjustbegun · 05/06/2012 09:29

DS1 sat unaided at 4.5 months and crawled at 11 months. He was very happy sitting and pointing at stuff! DS2 by comparison sat at 6 months and crawled a month later (and has not stopped moving since, unlike my still placid DS1).

gourd · 05/06/2012 13:15

Ours sat unaided and with no topples over at 21 weeks, crawled at 9 months and walked at 16 months. Sitting unaided early doesn't necessarily mean any other physical milestones will be early. Playing glockenspiel and other percussion, and enjoying turning pages in books started at around 6 months then role playing, pretending to feed teddy, pouring pretend tea into a cup etc and doing puzzles, building huge lego towers with reasonable accuracy etc started at 10 months which is perhaps why our LO didn't bother to move around much - too busy with other things.. Now at 21 months she doesn't sit down much at all, but we hope the ability to concentrate early will pay off and will eventually return at some point!

EBDTeacher · 05/06/2012 13:34

Another big gap between sitting and crawling here. Sat at about 17weeks, crawled at 9mo and walked at around 15. A bit like gourd, DS has always been very interested and spent long periods of time engrossed in 'science' and not particularly motivated by developing his gross motor skills- so sitting suited him just fine. Probably a bit of a personality thing. I have to actively encourage him to run and climb so we go to parks a lot.

In terms of baby proofing, depending on how much you're prepared to rearrange your house, I'd suggest looking into having a 'Montessori at home' type set up in at least one room. In our living room everything below about 1.5m is DSs and designed for him to be able to access freely. He can entertain himself with minimum input from me and I never really have to have 'arguments' with him in that room as it is designed to be safe for him. I save the arguments for the kitchen. We keep it clutter free and rotate the toys that are laid out so it keeps his interest up. Works really well for us, however, my living room looks like a swanky and very upmarket pre-school. Grin
