14 mo dd still not walking

My dd is 14 months, she cruises around furniture, walks pushing a walker or holding someone's hand but still not walking on her own. She is also out toeing (walking with her right foot turned out). Should I be worried?

I don't know about the toe thing but not walking up until 18MO is normal.

DS didn't walk until 16 months.

5madthings · 02/06/2012 20:43

not walking at that age is fine, 2 of mine didnt walk till 16mths, but not sure about her foot being turned out, you could ask the hv about that if you are concerned? :)

Lozza70 · 02/06/2012 20:54

My DS was cruising for months and months but did not walk until he was 15 months so I don't think you need to worry too much. If the foot thing is a worry speak to your HV.

Thank you all. I think I'm just panicking as all of my friends' children seemed to be walking by now. I know you're not supposed to compare. Think I will go and see hv just to put my mind at rest. Think i'm willing her to walk on her own, walking round with her all day is back breaking. I'm obviously going to have to be patient for a bit longer.

I think the average is 15 months but anything up to 18 months is normal and many are a bit later than that.

Gigondas · 02/06/2012 21:48

Dd was about 17 months

laura4jasmine · 03/06/2012 08:14

My DD1 was 13mths, DS1 was 12mths, DS2 was 19mths and DD2 was 22mths I was told by consultant that they wouldn't do much before 2yo, so you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the calm now before you are chasing her everywhere!

SpottyTeacakes · 03/06/2012 08:15

Anything up to two is considered normal these days but probably need a referral to physio for the foot being turned out

alana39 · 03/06/2012 09:38

My 3 walked at 14, 20 and 22 months.

I think I'd have been very concerned had my first been late, but by DS3 I had seen such a range it didn't really worry me.

Btw his foot also turned out, and I think he is hypermobile which would explain the delay in walking. I also have 1 foot that turns out but could never be described as too flexible and didn't walk late so talk to your GP or HV but try not to worry about it.

Can she get herself up from the floor into standing position? My DD was the same as yours, could cruise & hold on to walk but wasn't able to get up from the floor to stand on get own, the moment she did she took off running and hasn't stopped since!

StarMeKitten · 03/06/2012 12:52

My nearly 17 month old is not walking yet. She is happy to walk round just holding a finger & has taken steps but not confident to go off on her own yet!

I have been a bit worried but have chilled out a bit now as its obvious she is not far off and will do it when she's ready!

monairethu · 03/06/2012 19:30

neither of mine walked at 14 months (they took off at 16 & 18 months)and both are perfectly fine. i would make the most of it - when you're running around after her in a few months time you'll wonder what you worried about! good luck.

SCOTCHandWRY · 04/06/2012 12:24

OP, does she sit with her legs in a W shape (imagine looking from above, feet at the top of the W, knees at the bottom of the w)? - if yes, she may well be hypermobile (discourage sitting in a W shape, it stresses/stretches the joints), turned out feet, and slightly odd knee/hip movements, and not progressing from cruising to proper walking for a long time are all fairly common with hypermobility and if she has this she may need some supporting insoles, and advice about sitting positions and movements to strengthen muscle.
My DS4 cruised at 7 months and couldn't walk until 12months (his brothers walked at 9,10 and 9 months) as his feet and ankles could not stay in position. At his initial appointment, the orthopaedic consultant said, either go bare foot or have very supporting boot-type shoes (awaiting an appointment to see about insoles). Mostly he's barefoot.

VerityClinch · 04/06/2012 20:10

My DD didn't walk until 16 months (a whole ten days before her little brother was born Hmm)

She was a very early talker though.

My DS walked at 14 months but now, at 18 months, has nothing like the vocabulary that DD had at the same age.

I wouldn't worry at all.
