She is used to feeding to sleep and I need to stop it. She is fine when I pick her up but I leave the room and she cries and stands up in her cot. I don't want to leave her crying. Do I keep feeding her to sleep and it will sort itself out or do I need to find a way to help her self settle. I feel like I'm failing her not helping her find a way to feel relaxed and fall asleep herself.

This is amazing we just had a little play together in her cot, then came downstairs and she started falling asleep in my arms. I've taken her back up and she's just drifted off in the cot! I guess I didn't realise I was giving her negative associations with it and now I've got.to give positive ones. I also can't expect to just stick her in it and walk off can I? As nice as that would be! Going to install her old nursing chair right in front of cot.

We do:

  1. basic bedtime routine - pjs, milk, story during milk, story after milk, bed. Add bath before every other day but not part of routine if you see what I mean.

  2. lay in cot, and we say goodnight and then the same phrase ( sleepytime). Leave room

  3. decide how often to return, in our case if they are still crying every 1 min, if just playing around but not sleeping every 5 mins.

We also found trying to sooth with talking/ singing/ touch unless held just made them mad so was better the leave then return, lay back down, kiss, repeat it's sleepytime now, the leave and repeat.

2.5year old and 12 month old. Baby occasionally needs this now ( once every 2 weeks maybe), but have general used since 6/7 months and it allows them to self soothe but be reassured that you are there when they need.

We also have a video camera which helps as I can see if after 45secs they are grizzly but actually laying day with eyes shut then will wait a little longer so not to disturb them as they will be asleep very soon

Use for naps too

Now sleeps roughly 7.30pm-7am, 1pm-3pm, all in cot 9.30am 30 mon morning nap in pram
