Baby Gaviscon - help!

Have just been prescribed sone from Dr for DD reflux. She's 11 weeks old and weighs about 12lbs ish at the mo. Instructions say:-

1 dose in bottle for under 10lbs in no less than 4oz of feed.

2 doses in bottle for over 10lbs in no less than 8oz of feed.

She's over 10lbs but only has 5oz per feed and rarely finishes that.... How many doses should I use??

Tricky, my dd was on gaviscon for a long time. Choices are

  1. make up 8oz feed with 2 doses and waste some or fridge some after separating out what you need(aware this is not recommended feeding guidelines)

  2. underdose with 1 dose until her feeds get bigger.

The issue is that the gaviscon thickens the formula so two doses in only 5oz could be quite stodgy and also concentrates the salts in the gaviscon too much.

Good luck!

I'd definitely try just one dose first and see if it works. gaviscon does tend to cause constipation, so it seems better to go with as little as you can get away with.

I'd just do the 5oz with one sachet if I were you, that's what I do if ds only wants a little feed and it'll only be a tiny bit less concentrated. Or like someone else said (sorry on phone so can't check back) make the 8oz and separate, I done this when he was taking about 6oz feeds (would do 2x 8oz and 1x 4oz add more from the other 2 and cool & fridge).

I would say just the one dose

Yes, my son has gaviscon. I'd say one dose in 5oz. Don't save any unused as it goes really thick and gloopy. You'll probably need to use a teat with more holes than he's used to as well. I used it in all on my ds bottles, but he became v constipated, so after a week of it working I stopped putting it in his bedtime bottle. This worked fine - maybe the previous doses still worked - and made him much less bunged up.

I'd use Carobel instead! We've had extensive experience of both (two severe refluxers) and find Carobel much better. It doesn't cause constipation and you can adjust the dose as much as you like to find the right consistency.

LibraryLu I've given up completely, she was so constipated and when she did go it was awful to watch her in pain trying to pass rock hard pellets!!!!! Her being uncomfortable for a few minutes during feeds and bringing up a little milk after feeds is not half as bad a constant unhappy grizzly baby with tummy pain!

May have to try the Carobel u suggest, sounds perfect!?!
