DS 13 month nose dive on metal bar/ to go or not to go to A&E or GP?

I'm looking for advise please, not sure it's the right place for this thread but my DS 13 months fell head first onto the metal bar in front of the fire place on Friday. He took the bulk of the hit at the base of his nose, which sweeled up immediatly turned blue and give him two black eyes. He fell asleep shortly after (usual bed time so i didn't worry too much) and woke up his usual self, smiled and played all weekend, touched his nose repeatedly and let us touch his nose too without showing signs of pain. I'm just worried he may have a pocket of blood trapped under the base of his nose (called a septal hematoma) and I'm unsure if I should go to A&E and wait 5 hours to hear it's nothing as he seems absolutely fine despite his black eyes or if I'm being a bad parent by not checking it out properly. Any mums out there had a DC with a similar accident?

I would have gone to the doctor I think. I'm not one of 'those' mothers but I think 'it's his face' so go.

I would have been scared bout letting him go to sleep I think....

I'd do nothing, but if you are concerned I think the GP is the first place to go. They will send you on to A&E if they think you need to go.

Oh - my DD at 12 months fell on to the side of the slide & had a massive black eye. It swelled up so Much she couldn't see out. She was fine.

Take him. As a baby he won't wait five hours. Could he have broken his nose?

OliveandJim · 28/05/2012 13:29

Thanks for your advise (both). Still unsure what to do...It is his pretty face after all that took the hit, don't want him to end up having a horrible nose because I didn't get it checked out properly. (I'm so vain)! But he does look like a boxer with a nose three times his usual size (at the base only).

I always err (sp?) on the side of caution. I dropped my DD out of her car seat when she was a baby, she had a carpt burn on her forehead, took her to A&E and she was fine, but I would have worried otherwise.

Disclaimer - I am a worrier anyway.

Iggly, apparently they don't have bones in their noses to break at that age, only cartilage so no, no broken nose (we wouldn't be able to touch any part of his nose if he had broken it, and we can), but as I wrote in the OP there could be a pocket of trapped blood under the base of his nose called a septal hematoma, which I think I need to get checked out even if I'm told it's nothing. Ok, thanks all for helping me see the light! Just need to get time off work now....

Ah I see!

Well shouldn't be a problem - you're entitled to the time off.

I had a haemotoma on my leg - was very painful for a few days.
