When did you DC "Play"?!

My DD is 16 mo and all she wants to do is walk around the garden, living room anywhere really, I have tried drawing with crayons, wooden puzzles books, different toys, singing etc but she is just not interested in anything. She seems quite happy in just wandering around. ( Has been walking for around 8 weeks!)
Has anyone else DC been like this? Just want to check that i'm not on my own as would really like to start "playing" with her and feel like I am entertaining her!

Many Thanks

The play builds up gradually from the making faces to a baby stage to the peekaboo stage to the playing with toys stage.

Don't give up. Try lots of different stuff. Crayons and jigsaws might be a bit challenging for a dc who is totally into her new skill of walking. Maybe try rolling a ball for her to "fetch" like a puppy Grin My dcs were very into walking around and loved this. Does she like pushing things like a mini pushchair or mini shopping trolley. Would she like to stand at a low table and paddle in shallow water or sand? It sounds like she wants to play on her feet so try to find things she can play with doing that.

You can also play at naming the things she sees as she walks around the house.

Thank you Carrots, yes we do play with a ball but she doesnt seem to have a long attention span at the moment!! - is that normal? My first, so doubting everything!! haha
As the weather has been so nice we have been playing in paddling pool splashing etc, i will keep on!

Just to say you are not alone...DS2 is 18 months and literally spends all day wandering about! I got him a little pull alone dog(£5 basic fisher price thing) which he loves and takes it for a walk And we feed it and play with it as well lol!

Other than that he chases balls and kicks balls and plays with his big brother when he gets home from school! There might be about 30 mins over the course of the whole day where he actually plays in little bits with his toys but generally he's happy just pottering around.

I do actually try to play with him like you do but to be honest he's not that interested at the moment!

my dd is 17mths and her most fave thing to do is to potter around in the garden, when in the house she potters around lots too, she is still playing at times ie with cars or a pushchair, but she doesnt sit down to play much, she carried toys around with her. just this last few days she has taken to sitting and building towers out of wooden blocks or her stacking cups, until recently i had to build a tower and she knocked it down, try that most toddlers like knocking things down :)

5madthings · 28/05/2012 11:49

its very normal btw, they are just interested in everything and so wandering around it just them exploring and learning, my dd likes to 'help' me put washing in and out of the machine, or pull things out of the kitchen drawers!

we have a pop up house and a tunnel that she likes as well they can be used inside or out, they are worth buying as even my older boys still play with them :)

hi wazza

when my dd found her feet all she wanted to do was climb! sofa, chairs, ontop on toy box, bed - you name it she climbed it!! she didnt really have any interest in any of her 1st b-day pressies. she was pro at falling off things.

mind you now she is 20mths and wants my attention 24/7 to read her books to her, play puzzles, shape sorting, drawing and sing along to mr tumble :) its lovely but im shattered before she is haha.

im sure when your on the 10th repeat of her favourite book you'll ever why you so keen lol

she sounds a dream, enjoy! :)

StarMeKitten · 28/05/2012 13:26

My 16mo is very similar, apart from shes only just started walking, so she has mainly enjoyed crawling & climbing everywhere.

She does play with her toys in short bursts but the thing that keeps her attention most is books, and she's now started bringing me books to read.

We've got a trampoline and pop up tunnel/tent which she loves & she enjoys putting things in the boot of her toy car and taking it all back out again :)

My 16month old likes to copy and has 2 big brothers with plenty of ideas to copy!
He sings and tries to repeat actions that he's seen at a toddler soft play session, mainly because his big bothers do it all day every day and it involves throwing balls across the room.

He's just started copying me on the phone so puts an object up to his head and pretends he's on the phone.
He also copies me using the microwave and loves getting out the toddler plates or cups and putting them in, then trying to turn the dial round.

What about pouring water, filling and emptying containers. I have a bag of dry kidney beans and a bag of clean foil milk bottle tops that I put in a big bowl that they love playing in with their hands/cups/spoons.

Keep trying different types of things and in the meantime raise your concerns with HV and GP and see what they say

sh77 · 30/05/2012 14:47

My DS IS 14 months and exactly the same. Just started walking and loves being outdoors. Wouldn't dream of wasting my time asking gp why ds doesn not play!

Firsttimer7259 · 31/05/2012 10:30

Its not a waste of time - its making sure theres no other reasons, trying to pick up any issues early.

Dondrapersfavouritechick · 31/05/2012 11:44

Sorry Firsttimer, I agree with Sh77 - there's absolutely no reason to think there are any 'issues.' I'm quite surprised someone would suggest it. Every baby on here is the same - they're just exploring. Things are far more interesting than toys!

OP - my DS is exactly the same. He flits around, getting into mischief. He's far more likely to be happy helping me with washing or the dishwasher than 'playing.'

Firsttimer7259 · 31/05/2012 13:35

Sadly as a person with an SN child thats not entirely true. I am not saying there is anything to be concerned about but I do think it is best to check with a health professional and carefully go over what exactly in a behaviour is concerning you

Firsttimer7259 · 31/05/2012 13:37

PS helping you with the dishes is playing.
