My 4 week old DD is sleeping so much, only waking for I would guess 1-2 hours total a day.
She is feeding every 3 hours mostly, but it can be 2 or up to 4 1/2 over night.
Is this normal? I'm sure when I had my DS he was much more awake by now!? Confused

she is gaining weight and weeing and pooing etc? then yes i woudl say it can be normal, NONE of my babies did this but ihave friends whose did! and one little baby at toddler group was like this till very recently he was coming up for 3 mths before he was awake much, he is now 5mths ish? and the same as any other baby his age, still sleeps lots at night and has good naps in the day, some babie sjust like/need their sleep.

as long as she is feeding and gaining weight fine and alert when she is awake for short periods i wouldnt worry, enjoy it infact, it wont last!

Yep what 5madthings said.

Mine was like this. Five months now and much more trouble!

FartBlossom · 27/05/2012 20:21

DC3 was the same with me. always slept. I too was worried. She is now 8MO and thriving.

BikeRunSki · 27/05/2012 20:22

Sounds much like my two.
If she is gaining weight and producing wet nappies, then it all sounds fine.

my friend had a baby like that, he now coming up for two and a half and still sleeps 12 hours at night plus a two hour nap in the afternoon. My recently turned 2 year old (who never really slept in the day much from birth) has now dropped his day nap. I think kids just need more sleep than others

xkcdfangirl · 27/05/2012 20:23

So long as she's drinking enough milk when she does wake up (and, as 5 said, is gaining wight) this is prob OK in one so young but do check with a medical professional. Health visitors are not always that clued up so if you aren't sure they are advising you right don't be afraid to visit the GP for a more qualified opinion.

DD slept the whole time until she was at least 4 months old. Really, the whole whole time. Did 8-6 at night from something like 3 weeks. Exclusively breastfed. Gained weight, did everything she should on time. 3 now.
DS1 and DS2 much more wakeful...

Whizkidwithacrazystreak · 27/05/2012 23:07

Yes, and sleep is very important for their development.

ellesabe · 28/05/2012 12:42

Normal.

sparklyflowers · 28/05/2012 12:59

Thanks very much everyone. We had the 'worst' night yet for sleeping last night with her waking up loads and fussing but think it may have been the heat. She's asleep again now most of the morning. Should you ever wake a sleeping baby? What about if feed time goes over 4 hours?

enjot it while it lasts!!!

Ragwort · 28/05/2012 13:09

Yes, my DS was like that - 12 hours a night and 2 hour nap in the afternoon until he was about 3 Grin - brilliant !!

I never woke him for a feed either.

YouFloatLikeAFeather · 28/05/2012 13:25

My DS was like this; at two weeks old he was sleeping for 5/6 hours at a stretch overnight and about 3 or 4 during the day. He ate well, weed/pooed fine. The health visitor said not to wake him. He was absolutely fine and still sleeps brilliantly - only dropped his two hour afternoon nap at 3yo. Now at 3.9 he sleeps 12-13 hours per night. Enjoy it!

tholeon · 28/05/2012 14:54

I woke her if it went over five hours in the first few weeks, but tbh it rarely happened, she usually woke by herself, had a quick feed, and went straight back to sleep..

My son is nearly 3 weeks ok I’ve changed his formula as he was very unsettled since changing his sleeping a lot after every bottle just finishes the bottle and falls asleep is this normal ? He’s my second child but I simply can’t remember how much they sleep 😳
