Did your baby grow up on Nutramigen or Neocate? Did they develop normally

My 9 week old baby has a suspected cows milk intolerance and it's been suggested she go on an elemental formula, like Nutramigen.

Having researched it I can only find stories of toddlers with serious developmental delays and multiple problems after using it.

If you had to use it, how did your LO develop? Are they healthy and in line with other kids the same age? I'm really looking for reassurance.

TIA

That does help thanks :-) Which one was she on if you don't mind me asking? From quite young or later on?

She was on LF milk first, then soya milk, then PeptiJnr then Nutramigen - which worked!

She was about 3 months when she first went on the LF milk (I'd tried BF she wouldn't suck, was losing weight, cried all the time, reflux)

Honestly she's absolutely fine - you'd never know (I have 4 kids altogether, you'd not know the difference between her and the rest)

User3236569991 · 26/05/2012 19:37

What's LF?? Really glad to hear that.

Personal I know but did she hit puberty normally?

Anymore positive stories?

Lactose Free.

Grin oh yes she has hit puberty just fineGrin and is an expert in the door slam and stomp off

fuckarama · 26/05/2012 19:48

I've pm'd you.

I'm not trying to be flippant - I worried so much when she was small - it was all-consuming and the restrictive diet when she was weaning was a nightmare.

She's still mildly lactose intolerant, and manages it herself - people do give her funny looks when she says she doesn't like ice cream though Grin

I'm sure your DD will be fine and if nutramigen doesn't work there's another one (I can't remember the name of it) that is even more "broken down" or whatever it is they do to it.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 26/05/2012 19:56

My dd was on aptimil pepti whic is also a hydrolyzed formula. She is just coming up to 18 m so can't give you any contribution for any older but she was about 6 weeks give or take when I finally managed to get her put on to it and she's now on alpro 1+ but so far so good. Pretty much bang on with mile stones and is very happy and active and looks to be a perfectly happy healthy toddler. The milk is great stuff the change is pretty much instant and I have yet to see any delays as a result :)hope ur ds thrives as much as my dd on the prescription mile :)

Gargula · 26/05/2012 20:35

My 4.5 yr old DS was on nutramigen. He started on the premmie milk (can't remember the name) and then went on to nutramigen at about 8 weeks, until 1 yr when he "outgrew" his intolerance (if that's what it was).
He's in rude health now. No delays no nothing.
Do you have any other concerns about development or just the milk issue?

JuicyOrange · 26/05/2012 20:40

Sorry to intrude on the thread, but you found only stories of DD children after they used a certain formula? Really? I had no idea a type of formula could cause DD!!

blabalalalablabla · 26/05/2012 20:41

My 8yo was on neocate and then neocate advance.
Developed the same as any of her peers.
Only minor difference was that her teeth were later coming in (first came through around 10 months- although this is the first time I've thought that it could have been related to the formula)

fuckarama · 26/05/2012 20:42

With some conditions, like PKU as an example, if it's not found fast enough (PKU always is in this country but my brain is hot and frazzled) then giving the wrong sort of formula (ie standard baby milk) can cause developmental delay.

BertieBotts · 26/05/2012 20:43

What's she on at the moment, breast milk or formula? If you're breastfeeding then it may be possible to eliminate dairy from your own diet as another option.

If not then ignore me obviously Blush

The special dietary milks don't lack anything that the other milks have, it's just that the proteins in it are more broken down. I'm sure she'll be fine :)

Bonkerz · 26/05/2012 20:48

My DS is still on neutramigen. He was put on it at 16 days old (I took a break for one night from breast feeding and he ended up in hospital with a swollen bowel-intersusseption-caused by cows mill protein intollerence)

He is now just turned one and development is on track and has been all through. He failed his milk challenge two weeks ago and is now dairy free till age two when he will be challenged again!

submarine · 26/05/2012 21:58

I would be very surprised if the children you have researched had developed developmental delay after using it.

Some children need neocate etc as a food substitute because of developmental difficulties causing feeding difficulties.

my daughter is on neocate as she is food intolerant , can you post lonks of your research?

LostInWales · 26/05/2012 22:04

DS2 was on nutramigen until he was 2 and passed the milk test thing. He is 10 on Weds and if I told you I was sure he would never make it to his first birthday at one point...

He has just scored a high 4 for maths in year 5, is on track to get minimum 4's in his sats next year and is incredibly sporty, funny and gorgeous (IMHO). He is tiny and skinny for his age but someone has to be below average or the charts wouldn't work.

This is one of those times I'm actually glad I didn't have Mr Google when he was a baby Wink

ElectricSoftParade · 26/05/2012 22:09

My DS was on TPN until he was 6 months, then Neocate was gradually introduced via a feeding pump.

He is now a very healthy, although thin due to his problems, 7 year old. Is doing very well at school.

ElectricSoftParade · 26/05/2012 22:11

Nutramigen was no good for DS. He preferred the taste, once allowed to feed, of Neocate Hmm.

I can still remember the smell.

ElectricSoftParade · 26/05/2012 22:15

Sorry, keep thinking of things. DS has Short Gut Syndrome which means, for him, his small intestine did not develop properly and didn't attach the the large intestine. He lost most of his small intestine during 3 surgeries at 2 days, 2 weeks and then the final and one that worked 4 months. Love Kings College x

ElectricSoftParade · 26/05/2012 22:17

SORRY! He was using Neocate until 4 years old, then we started introducing milk products etc.

Am aware I am babbling now Blush.

User3236569991 · 26/05/2012 23:24

I'm not going to link to the research as I don't want to scare anyone unnecessarily esp if it's not a balanced picture. Google can be a curse. What I will say is I found quite a lot of stories of people with kids with multiple issues that they didn't have at birth, but I suppose kids who are fine don't end up on those forums...

Another one with a very happy and normal child here!

My DS2 is on Neocate, has been since 3 weeks. He was completely tube fed until around 6 months ago, now has around a 50:50 split of milk to solids.

He's 2.2 yo and does everything he's meant to! Runs, shouts, laughs, tantrums.... He's a ball of energy and interested in everything.

He was extremely poorly as a baby (multiple problems) and we were only given a 50% chance he'd make it to his 2nd birthday. He's defied all the predictions and apart from a couple of minor problems now and some catching up on eating he's perfectly healthy and well. You'd never know looking at him there'd ever been anything wrong.

garliclover · 29/05/2012 14:17

My 2-year-old DS is on Pepti, like Wheresmycaffeine's DC, and is healthy, growing perfectly well, and happy, despite having several other severe allergies aswell. Perhaps you'd like to start a thread on the Allergies board in the Health section -- you'll receive plenty of reassurance about special formulas there!

LostInWales · 29/05/2012 15:19

Just wanted to come on again and say my nutramigen fed DS2 is 10 today Grin Grin Grin I always feel a little tearful on birthdays remembering how sure I was he was just going to fade away and none of the Drs would be able to save him. Now he is fit as a fiddle, sporty, clever, good looking and funny and just the most fabulous child in the world (note; I am never prone to exaggeration when discussing my children Wink) up yours health visitor who told me if I went on anti depressants he would put on weight

fay2318 · 14/02/2013 12:19

hey, sorry to butt in on someone elses message, i dont know how to start my own!

my son is on neocate active and im trying to work out if this milk can cause bad behaviour, my son is 2yrs5months and his behaviour is awful! we have seen our health visitor for advice and see to have hit a brick wall. he also doesnt sleep very well or eat very much, im lucky if i manage to get him to eat a full meal in about 5 days :s hes not a big sweet eater either so he isnt filling up on them. thankd in advance xx
