What can your 18m old do (words/sentences/identifying shapes/understanding etc)

I'm talking more mentally than physically....

Can they identify shapes? How many words etc? Point to animals/objects in a book? Count???

I'm a bit worried.... Confused

OP posts:
BeachInsteadOfPlaguegroup · 22/05/2012 22:09

DS1 could say a few words at that stage.

DS2 isn't quite 18 months and can say a few words.

Shapes, counting and colours all came nearer (or past) 2 IIRC.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 22/05/2012 22:10

I think they tend to focus on either mental or physical

At 18m -

DS could speak in sentences of 6 words, point to animals and objects, knew more words than I could count. BUT he had only just started walking

DD could jump, run and climb like a monkey but only had 3 words - Mama, Dada and Me. She knew a couple of signs (milk, Justin and a couple of others)

At this age they suddenly take off with language - DD is now 22m and has loads of words

BeehavingBaby · 22/05/2012 22:13

DD can say maybe 20-30 words but probably only DH, me and the CM understand most! Certainly no colours, shapes or counting. She knows lots of body parts and animal noises.

What is worrying you? It's a particularly variable age IME.

Rubirosa · 22/05/2012 22:17

21 month old ds has lots of single words - 30 maybe?

Doesn't know any shapes/colours.

Does know some animals - cat, dog, lion, fish, monkey, bee, snake, pig, cow, sheep - which he can name and do the noise/sign for.

Will point to some things in a book if you ask him.

Can point to facial features and stick his tongue out if asked.

Doesn't count.

Does sing a few songs (kind of!).

Babbles loads.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 22/05/2012 22:19

Not sure what your concerns are but animal noises count as words at that age - also words that only you can recognise (eg DD says foof instead of shoe)

ellesabe · 22/05/2012 22:20

Mine can do the following:

  • Says about 10 words e.g. shoes, ball, car
  • Signs about 20-30 words using makaton
  • Understands and follows a range of everyday instructions
  • Recognises a few shapes (circle, star, triangle)
  • Loves the number 2, recognises it and tries to count objects saying "two, two, two" instead of "one, two, three"
  • Does shape sorters and simple puzzles which involve putting the pieces into the holes
  • Holds a pencil correctly and scribbles with it
  • Builds towers of up to five bricks

I have no idea if this is normal but like to think that she is doing quite well mentally -as she still can't stand up unaided let alone walk-- Grin

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 22/05/2012 22:25

I think there is a broad spectrum at this age.
My ds is 18mo next week and I hope think is fairly average
He can say
Mummy
Daddy
Nanna
Nana (banana)
More more (more)
Ter (water)
Dan jew (thank you)
No
Bye bye
Flower
Bubble (not always in context)
Ball
Go (after we say ready, steady)
Two ( after we say one, but not real counting)
Lully (think this means lovely as says this when happy)
Baby
Dupmy (dummy) Blush
duppie (duckie - his duck soft toy)
Dere (there)
Dat (as in what is that)
Uh oh
Oh dear
Lilly (aunty's name)

He can point to to things he knows, but not always accurately.
If you ask where is his nose/eyes a general point/poke somewhere on his face but not always exact Grin

probably some other little things but that covers most of his communication

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 22/05/2012 22:29

Oh he also hold pencil correctly
Feeds himself
Can do staking cups
Is clearly a genius as uses bricks that don't belong to shape sorter but fit in every hole to cheat [cheat]
loves building and destroying brick towers since 12 mo
I would say his fine motor skills are much more advanced that his gross motor skills or speech, and possibly the only thing thing where he might be slightly ahead of average

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 22/05/2012 22:30

No animal sonds here

lurcherlover · 22/05/2012 22:30

My DS is almost 19mo. He understands most of what I say to him I think, but doesn't say many words. He babbles non-stop but his only actual words are Daddy, mummy, chair, no, bye-bye, door and baa (used for most animals, not just sheep...). He can point to his eyes, nose, mouth and toes and follows basic instructions like take shoes off or give it to Mummy. He points and makes chimp noises to get things he wants ("ah, ah, ah!"). He likes turning pages in books, but has no patience to sit and listen to a story. He couldn't point to animals etc. He certainly has no concept of shapes, colours or numbers.

Nagoo · 22/05/2012 22:31

Mine can stack bricks, point to animals and do the right noises.

She talks a little bit, not as much as Lainey's.

I had a bit of a panic, because DS could talk a LOT at her age. But she uses cutlery, drinks from open cup and other 'I'm independent but can't be arsed to talk to you' things.

There are too many things to learn :)

lurcherlover · 22/05/2012 22:32

Oh yes, he loves shape sorters and duplo too.

mum23girlys · 22/05/2012 22:33

My dd can say quite a few words and recognises and names dog, cat and pig. Words are things like mum, dad, and both her sisters names (sort of Grin). Just this last week I've noticed she's become less shy and shouts hiya out her pram at everyone. She can name things like shoes, ASDA Grin and asks for things like juice or bath. She also tells the dog to sit which is very sweet as he obeys but doesn't do it for anyone else!

Also starting to 'help' me dress and undress her (not always at the right times!!). I do think she probably says a bit more than my other 2 dds at the same age but she has only been walking 6 weeks whereas they were walking at 12 months so maybe she's had more time to concentrate on speaking etc whereas they were too busy exploring.

Think there is a massive difference between what different children can and can't do at this age and a lot of children suddenly start to say lots of different words at around this age.

mewkins · 22/05/2012 23:00

Dd is now 22 months and I have noticed the last 4 months have been huge in terms of learning. She was walking early (11mths) but always quite careless and had now become a solid and sturdy toddler who rarely falls over. She can say lots of things both independently and copying short phrases eg. feed mewmew, mewmew's bowl (that's the cat's name btw!), 'nanna look! teddy! etc and this stringing together of words has only taken off in the last 6weeksish.

Mentally I can see her making connections and getting ideas (usually mischievous or potentially dangerous!) and she can do simple puzzles, match stickers to shapes and recognise drawings, even rubbish ones I do of family members, identifiable only by hairstyle!
Really the main thing she struggles with is concentration but I guess that will improve with age.

Ozziegirly · 23/05/2012 05:22

Mine is 20 months and has about 80 or so words, not sure as he can basically copy what we say now. He puts two words together; "More cracker" "mummy car" "big truck" etc.

He can recognise (and say) diamond shape, oblong, circle, star (all on his shape sorter) and similar to above he loves the number 2 and that one he can recognise on house numbers etc. He can count to 13.

I think he knows green but that's all re colours (and I think that's because of traffic lights)

He can point to loads of things in books and will search intently for things if you ask him to look for them.

He has a bizarre and useless skill that he can recognise my car make and his friend Ben's mum's car make and when we are out and about will point out "mummy car" and "ben car". He does love cars though.

Similar to mewkins he walked early (11 months) but it's in the last couple of months that he can actually trip but not fall and can kind of regain his balance whereas in the past he would fall much more often.

I think he's probably a bit ahead of where he should be, especially in terms of language and walking/running, but equally there are other children in our mum;s group who were much further "behind" for example with walking, and now you would never know who walked early and who late. I'm sure it all evens out as they get bigger anyway.

capecath · 23/05/2012 08:10

At 18 months DS could barely say 5 words and definitely not recognising shapes, colours, animals or numbers. At 21 months now words are coming out in all directions and I can't even keep track anymore! He recognises animals and makes noises, sometimes groups things into colours, but think we're still a way off with shapes and numbers (but think that is normal). He has always been extremely active, into climbing everything and very co-ordinated.

I wouldn't worry, I think we generally expect our kids to develop faster than what is realistic...

familyfun · 24/05/2012 12:19

dd can say about 30 words, she can say "oh dear" and "oh no" when she falls over, she knows and points to body parts like hair, mouth, nose, tongue, teeth, tummy, arm, leg, foot, hand, ears.
she cant count or do shape sorter or jigsaws.
she matches things, like when postman pat comes on tv, she fetches postman pat book saying pat pat. she says ears then goes round room pointing out everyones ears.
if i ask her if she has weed or pood she tells me and then gets nappy/wipes/change mat out ready.
she scribbles with crayons.
she has only walked in last 2 months but is very steady and can climb slides and steps on her own already.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 24/05/2012 20:29

I read once that it is not the number of words but the ability to use the words in context

So the number of objects is not as important as being able to understand instruction (bring mummy the ball) or things like 'oh dear' and 'poor me' in the right context

This is such a fascinating age because they are almost developing in front of your eyes - my DD is constantly surprising me! However, some kids take off at 16m and some at over 2 or somewhere in between.

My DS was very advanced for his age at 18m but at 5 he is bright but not advanced of his peers in any noticeable way.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 24/05/2012 20:37

dd2 is 19mo
doesn't know shapes, colours etc. can't do shape sorters or simple jigsaws. can scribble with a pencil but no lines, shapes etc.

she does know her animals, and can make an attempt at lots of animal noises.
she points out lots of things in books, knows body parts etc.

she has very few recognisable words, but makes noises that I understand eg deeee = drink, jeeeeezzz = cheers, amama = banana, raaah=giraffe, chocchoc= chocolate
has put two words together once ("more chocchoc" Grin).
broadly her speech is not spontaneous and we have to encourage her a lot to ask for things.

and she does a mean Sleeping Bunny.

ipanicked · 25/05/2012 20:01

DD (18mo) can say mama and dada, nothing else. She roars for every animal noise. That's it - numbers definitely not (my 3yo can't recognise the number 2!) shapes and colours - I've never tried (should I have been?!) She is walking so one blessing Grin

I'm not worried at all though, I know she'll catch up at some stage. She seems pretty content being her. Also DS only had about 3 words at 18mo but now I can't shut him up Hmm
