Hair washing woes!

Hi all, DD is 15 months and washing her hair has become so traumatic it's almost not worth it! We've got a rubbery visor type thing but she pulls it straight off which makes it even worse as the suds go in her eyes. There's no way she'll stay still enough for me to dip her in backwards. I've been rinsing her hair with one of her stacking cups and a dry sponge on her forehead, but it doesn't always work and she's on to i now so shakes her head and makes it worse for herself. Has anyone tried one of those jug things that fit around their foreheads? Really running out of ideas and I think she's becoming quite phobic about it. Bath times should be fun and this is really quite upsetting.

Any other ideas?

The jug thing was amazing when my dc were little. Hardly any water leaks around the rubber edge. Def worth giving it a try

Ooh that's good to know. Definitely get her one of those then. Thanks!

I have the same problem :(

My current tactic is to use a soggy flannel to wet and rinse the hair. It takes ages cos I have to wait for her to look up, then wipe, then rinse flannel and repeat. Ages. And then I start on her twin brother!

I have to say, that barring any particularly spectacular food mishaps, they have two baths a week but only one hair wash. Nobody's said they're dirty or smelly yet Grin

If the jug works, come back and let us know?

Hold up something exciting so she has to look up, like a bright and noisy YouTube video or something. DD was like this, and this, plus giving her a flannel to cover her eyes, was the only thing that helped.

She grew out of it at about 2.5, and now voluntarily washes her hair for fun while standing under the shower, so there's hope! Grin

Haha! I've just ordered the jug thing so will report back. Good idea about holding something up, although YouTube on the uninsured iPhone 4S over the bath is probably asking for trouble. I've enough of a battle keeping it out of the toilet bowl these days, which reminds me I need to rinse Daddy's mouthwash before he gets home...

Oooh dear, probably not a good idea then!

We just gave up using shampoo on ds as hairwashing was so dreadful - 2 years later and you would never know! I just rinse his hair with water. For dd, aged 11 months, I have only ever used water and her hair is lovely, curly and thick. Another mum suggested it, apparently before puberty their hair doesn't get greasy and so can self-regulate more easily.

debka · 22/05/2012 19:10

1st of all don't bother with shampoo. DD2 is 15mo and we've never used shampoo. Just water gets her hair clean enough.

Second of all, no need to wash hair every night. DD1 kicks up a massive stink so we do hers about once a week.

And they do grow out of it eventually!

LaTristesse · 22/05/2012 21:26

We have a jug but DS, 2, hates it because with the soft bit on the forehead it means the jug is infront of his face, which he hates! We currently do him outside the bath across my knee leaning backwards. He's not keen but it does work. I think I might have put humidify he shower forever after trying the tap attachment though! Oops...

Pogger · 22/05/2012 21:32

We had exactly the same. I can still remember the screaming! :)

I also used the jug (bought from Boots, I think), but did something else too.

I got a mirror and put it at the end of the bath, so she could see herself in it. I started off by playing a game with a rubber bath toy (i.e. balancing it on her head etc) and then put some soap suds on instead - you'll need to stay really upbeat and have some 'patter' prepared in advance!

Once she was relaxed about that, I'd wet her hair and make it spiky, created silly shapes, anything really to make her giggle. There were still some tears at the very end when we had to do the final rinse, but it was SO much better during because she found looking at herself so funny.

Might be worth a try for you too. Good luck!

my DD is a nightmare for washing her hair, always has been but i have found a miricle thank the lord for rapunzel lol !!!! my DD saw tangled when it first came out and is desperate for hair like rapunzil. i found some 'tangled shampoo' with a pick of rapunzel on it. I told her if she used it she would have hair the same no she washes her hair when ever i ask without problem and i just keep filling up the bottle with normal shampoo once it was empty... slightly crul maybe but at least it worked lol! Wink
