DD has an imaginary friend that hits her?

My DD 2.3 years old seems to have an imaginary friend at nursery. The first time she stayed on her own she complained of a girl called Sarah hitting her. So I asked her teachers and there is no Sarah in nursery? They didn't seem aware of any incident. She kept telling me about it and today she mentioned her again but said they are friends now. Weird. She has excellent speech-can have proper conversations etc so I'm pretty sure I'm not mishearing her.
Is this common so young? I'm guessing it might be a way of coping with being without me there. I hope it doesn't mean she's unhappy.

Hi, didnt want you to go unanswered! I have not experienced this with Ds (5 now), however it sounds as though she is simply experimenting with social scenarios. Ds has imaginary friends and often 'falls out' with them. If she seems happy and content then I wouldn't worry. Perhaps voice your concerns to the staff and ask them to keep an eye on her? Hope I helped! Smile

maybe she has seen this happen in the nursery between other children and is unsure on how to deal with it and in her own little way is seeking your advice, my dd also had an imaginary friend called barney the cat and he would sometimes bite or scratch her or say mean things, so i told her to tell barney that if he did it again then he would not be allowed round to play anymore and that i knew barneys mummy and i would tell her he has been naughty, it seemed to help as he played nice from then on, sometimes they say these things as they want us to take part in their imaginary world she may want you to tell sarah off and tell her its not nice to hit.

Yes maybe that's it. I did mention it to staff and did tell DD that no one should hit and if Sarah hit her to tell the teacher and mummy.
She seems to be getting on with her now so I guess it's ok.
