Baby screaming when having a poo

I switched my daughter to formula two and a half weeks ago after two weeks of totally unsuccessful breast feeding, shes four and a half weeks old now

I started her on SMA however after a week she was totally constipated so my health visitor suggested I try a different formula, shes on Aptamil now, she continues to have lots of problems however, my GP started her on Lactulose and infacol, shes a lot less windy and colicy but she is still struggling to pass a motion, if shes not been in 24 hours she cries and strains constantly, reaching a fever pitch as she actually passes her poo, she is no longer passing hard stools but this behaviour continues

Im giving her 5mls of Lactulose a day and 1/2 - 1 oz of boiled and cooled water and I just wondered if anyone else has been through this and has any suggestions for me as to anything else I can be doing?

Try giving her 5 ml prune juice in 50ml boiled water, is excellent for constipation. HV recommended it once and worked well. Baby liked the taste too. I got the prune juice from health food shop but I think you can get it in supermarket. Put lots of Vaseline around her anus too.

Forgot to say, my baby was exactly same age as your when troubled with constipation

Our dd was like this for months.
She then started to have some really unsettled evenings, screaming and squirming her bum in pain so I took her to the dr thinking that maybe she had worms as she had been eating loads too.
The dr gave her some worm medicine and not only did the pain jn the evenings stop but suddenly it was no longer painful for her to poo any more. We had no idea that the two things were related.
Worth a thought?

My dd (now8m) did this until around 4months, witg it easing a little when we started putting her to sleep on her tummy from 3months. All poo was loose and anything between 1-10 days between each movement. We eventually realised it seemed to be something to do with the way she tried to poo or pass wind, almost like she'd toghten up All her muscels to push, including her anus!!! She eventually stopped doing it around 4mo but ot eased off before then. The theory behind thos kind of problem i think os called dischezia, pr something similar. My hv told me about it. (ps my lo was EBF).

My daughter had terrible problems with constipation - was absolutely awful. It seemed to right itself by around 2 but then we discovered she had a hernia. We realised that the Hernia was the reason pooing hurt so much. The straining exasperated the hernia. bit of a circle.

Thanks guys, Im going back to the doctors tomorrow hopefully I can get her sorted its so distressing to watch, and shes not had a poo today so I guarantee that Im going to have a sleepless night with her, shes also hardly taken any milk today which just makes me think that shes more consipated than I thought

As everyone has said, go for it!! My dd has been in a strict routine since she was born and dh and I would decline invites out because it would affect her routine! We regret doing that now!! We've put our lives on hold and that's not what having a child is about!! We won't do that if and when number 2 comes along!
