How many words at this age

My son is 22 months & has a great understanding...& chats in his own way etc. I'm just wondering roughly how many words a child of this age should be saying? He goes through phases of just making noise if he wants things..which I don't respond to & tell
him the word etc. He speaks clearly on words he does know...just wondering if I can encourage him more.

The literature I have says a 24 month old should have about 50 words.

I was surprised at how much even one month can make in their developement when they are so young.

Sounds like he's going well, as are you. Just keep talking to him and pointing out new things to him, whether it's in books or around you. They soak it all up like sponges.

Thank you Risk....we go out for walks & drives & point out everything we see. I talk to him constantly & have story time etc. I'm not concerned he doesn't understanding as he obviously can by how he reacts/responds when I ask/tell him things. Just worried he isn't vocalising as much as may be he should be.

My health visitor said animal noises etc count as "words" too. If you really thought about it I bet he knows quite a lot!
From 2 onwards they seem to pick up new words by the day!
my DNiece used to talk like an ewok... complete nonsence to anyone but her, but is now a very articulate 6 YO.

sockmonkey....thats interesting -thank you. he loves to make animal noises when he spots an animal when we are out or in a book. I'm surprised with how much he understands...I guess he will become more vocal when he is ready. Smile

I have an almost 22mo too, and he says 'goodbye', 'hi', 'yeah', 'no', and various animal sounds. He says 'mama' and 'daddy' sometimes too. I am not worried as I know he'll be fine. There's lots of pointing going on and he also talks away in his own wee language. Your little one sounds fine too.

Thank you lovechoc....I think I've only thought more about it when I was reading up about potty training & it was saying about waiting until the child had a good level of understanding (which he does) & can vocalise that they need the potty (which he can not). Holding off on potty training as on further reading/observation etc...he does seem a bit too young.
