freakishly fast development?

DD is my first and I didn't pay any attention to kids before her - i have no idea when they walk and talk etc...i'm aware theyre all different but i'm getting a lot of comments from relatives about how fast she's coming on.

she never really had a floppy newborn neck, from 2wks she could hold it up easily, and from 4 we could walk around with her and she will hold her head up perfect. likewise from 2wks she could roll onto her side by herself - she prefers to sleep that way. at 4wks, she managed to roll herself onto her front!

today at 5wks, she has been leaning on my chest with hers, and pushing her bottom up with her legs under her own steam....she seems very active and likes to look around when being carried, and hates lying on her back, thrashes arms and legs - seems to enjoy being propped sat up with pillows/held upright. if i hold her on my shoulder, she seems to try crawling over the top!

doesnt matter to me when she does things....just wondering if i've birthed a freak of nature who'll be competing at this year's olympics!? or do others have the same? I walked at 8mo which i'm tol d is pretty early?

Head development sounds very normal.
Rolling over is early, but not unheard of. I knew a child at toddler group who was moving round the room by rolling at 3 months. Could only roll one way so used to roll until stuck against something.

I think a lot of people are astounded at the progress of their helpless little baby so you're not alone Wink

haha - i can see her rolling round the room soon! no olympics then....

My dd1 was like this. Rolled at 8 weeks, could sit by four months, pull to stand at 6 months and walked at 9.

Everyone used to go wild at how brilliant it was but its not, a 9 month old charging about with no concept of safety was hair curling.

She spoke at 8 months too and now her physical development is the same as any other 3.5yr old but shes perhaps quite articulate. She was very forward but its plateaued out and she's by no means remarkable.

The crawling thing is a newborn reflex. All newborns can do this from birth. Babies who have straightforward unmedicated births and who are given enough time on their mum's tummy can crawl up and latch onto the breast themselves. If you google "breastcrawl" there are videos Smile.

It all sounds v normal, but is delightful and amazing to see in your own child nevertheless Smile

It's fast, but not unheard of! Ds could hold his head up during skin to skin contact, I was terrified he was going to roll off me! He could roll onto his side during the 1st week as we were in hospital for 1 week and I remember it was there. He sat up at 12 weeks, cruising at 5 months and crawling at 6 months, so I think you're in for a fun time! Don't expect much rest! Ds was actually really hard work as a new born as he constantly wanted entertaining instead if sleeping nicely most if the time lol.

BigBoPeep · 10/05/2012 22:39

yes i hear you about the hard work - already she seems frustrated and needs entertainment more everyday! a very young but mobile baby seems hard work!

Mine didn't do things quite as quickly as yours but she sounds similar, especially the crawling over the shoulder thing and constantly wanting to be entertained. Mine is now 7 months and I have to chase her around the room to change her nappy as she crawls away and throws a paddy when I catch her and turn her over. Get ready and buy her a play pen coz she will be exhausting if she's anything like mine!

Sounds like my dd2 (her active nature is a total surprise as ds1 was a total lump, didn't crawl until 11 months and didn't walk until 15 months). She has done things so much earlier. At seven months, I'm even using the stair gates again because, even though I don't leave her unsupervised, the bathroom is next to the stairs and she is so quick now that when I put her on the floor to run the taps, she flips herself over and I worry that she'll just keep on going down the stairs.

The one thing that is even more starkly different to ds1 is that she refuses to be spoon fed at all. With ds1 I was so nervous giving him his first finger foods but with dd2, she will only eat things she can pick up herself. I thought this whole baby led weaning stuff was horseshit before her, now I'm a total convert.
