When do babies start trying to sit up?

My DD is 21 weeks old now and some babies we know of a similar age are starting to try and sit up from lying flat on their backs. They lift their heads and feet, bit like doing stomach crunches :)

My DD isn't lifting her head yet, she is all about her feet. Typically trying to get them in her mouth, so she feels no need to move her head when the feet can come to her mouth :)

I spend some time each day pulling her up to sitting, which she loves and she does put effort into moving her head when at about 45 degrees.

Just wondering when in general people found their DC started to lift their head?

DD and DS both lifted their heads from being tiny and would do mini crunches. DS is 8 months and while he can sit up with a struggle from on his back, from about 5.5/6 months he's been rolling onto his hands and knees and springing over to sitting using his arms so often doesn't bother the hard way.

Does she hold her head steady when you pull her to a sitting position ie doesn't let it drop back?

My second didn't sit up on her own til 16m, crawled at 18m walked at 22m. Was completely normal once started walking and you couldn't tell the difference between her and her peers who had been walking from 10m on.
She began to talk very early though...

Don't worry - the 'normal' range is huge.

Ds could sit up from 12 weeks, but I don't think that's average. She's only 4-5 months which is very little still so I don't think you need to worry, especially as she is developing her movements :)

my DS never really sat or went from lying to sitting position, until he could crawl and get from sitting to crawling to sitting, which was about 9 months. He never rolled either (walked at 14 months)

Dd started lifting her head off the floor as you describe pretty young, can't remember exactly - but she really hated lying on her back (or her front) and was much happier upright so it kind of made sense. She sat unsupported (i.e. if we plonked her down in a sitting position she'd stay there without falling over) at about 6 months, pretty average. If you want to encourage your dd to use her neck muscles, just spend time with her supported upright if she likes it, sitting on your lap, in a sling, bumbo or whatever, or on her tummy on the floor with her chest propped on a rolled up towel or something. Out of the babies I know I only remember seeing a few do the tummy crunch thing, others didn't but still sat, crawled etc. absolutely fine.

my son cant sit from lying down but can from crawling (at just under 8mths)

Thanks for the comments, sounds like there is a wide range, we seem to know a lot of tummy crunching babes!

She does hold her head steady when we pull her up to sitting and she loves sitting up supported.

Dont worry its still early. Im doing an SVQ in childcare, learning and development, and the range is really large. If shes not doing it by 9 months I would see HV, but her development sounds in the perfect range to me x
