Baby doesn't say anything

Dd is nearly 4 months - and I'm not expecting her to hold a conversation or anything, but she doesn't make any sounds at all! She obviously cries and laughs, and has no problem with eye contact etc. but she says NOTHING! Should I be worried? I think she can hear ok - she's not very responsive to sounds, but does react to them a bit, and she passed the newborn hearing test. I'm sure ds was saying agoo by now!

My daughter didn't say anthing until she was about 9 months. The heath vistor came round to check for austim and send her for a hearing check - all clear. She doesn't say a lot (has about 20 words I guess - she is now 18 months), but understands so much. I ma not worried now and am sure she wil come out with a whole sentence, subordinate clause and all soon

As I understand it, consonant sounds don't appear until around 9 months. I was worried about 9mth old ds2 because he didn't babble (his older brother didn't speak until 3yrs + so I was more than a bit paranoid!). The HV suggested waiting for a few more weeks. I was stunned when ds2 just came out with entire words. It seems he just didn't feel like babbling!

yes - 9 months - "ba ba ba" etc - doing it at the mo

4 months is still quite early...I don't think my dd was making noises by that stage, but she's coming along fine now (16 months)

Perhaps your first baby was just well advanced at 4 months?

I know I was very concerned at my ds2 7 month check becasue he was making absolutely no sounds at all. He had started( probably around 5+ months) but stopped. It transpired that he had glue ear and associated hearing difficulties. The newborn hearing test looks at permanent hearing loss, so it is possible that your baby may have glue ear. On the other hand I would agree with o the others that it it is very early. I would just keep on watching. Even if it is glue ear there woudn't be any rush to do anything so don't panic.

Thanks everyone - I'm going to talk to the Health Visitor today, and see what she thinks.

Incidentally, I was reading some of ds' old notes, and I notice that the old style hearing test they did at 8 months is called the 'Health Visitor Distraction Test'. I wonder if there really is a test for distraction in HVs - if not, perhaps there ought to be!
