Our DS is 17months and starting to get very independant and wanting to feed himself. He is struggling with the concept of cuttelry, bashing it in a bowl but not really understanding how to use it. We have been trying alot of finger food but he often tries to shove the lot in. Any advice please? x

I was giving DS a fork (toddler size one) from about 10/11m to have a try with, plus hands of course. Easier to use a fork to stab food than a spoon to scoop it up, IMHO.

Just let him practice Smile A dog is very useful for the floor Grin

They can start getting really fussy at 17/18 months. tbh as long as he's eating I wouldn't sweat it he will learn soon enough just make sure he has it to hold/play with/drop. Plenty of time to worry about cutlery and manners :)

I spent a few meals guiding DS's hand while he held the spoon/fork and narrating what we were doing 'scoop and LIFT!' 'poke and LIFT!'. I then stopped guiding his hand, but used the same words to remind him what to do.

He is 2.3 now and would still prefer to be spoon fed at every meal, but if I busy myself at the sink he is more than capable of getting the food into his mouth!
