How much lying is normal in a 7yr old?

One of dds pals was here for tea yesterday, and almost everything she said was false. For eg, I have an iPod, so does this child, DD asked, 'do you have xxx game' pal said 'yes'. When I asked her a question about it it was obvious she doesn't have it, and then when i asked another she said 'oh my version doesn't have that, when in fact all versions do.

She lied about several other things, after the first lie I asked her questions about several of the things she said and it was obvious that almost all she came out with was fabricated.

now DD is not an angel, and I know she lies occasionally, but I just can't understand this child lying at this level. We've known her for years, and she's always been a bit prone to it, but it was honestly almost everything she said. I just wonder why and how common it is in your experience at this age??

Oh, and this kid is doing well at school, is confident, capable and has lots of friends...which makes it even more puzzling to me.

It is pretty common if they are trying to impress or not feel left out. As a teacher I find they will lie over such small things a lot of the time that wouldn't get them into trouble if they told the truth but when you discuss it with them it often seems that they say what they think will make other people like them without thinking it through. As they get a bit older they quiet like being a bit more individual so it seems to phase out (untill they are older and trying to hide stuff from you, homework, boyfriend etc!)
