5yr old with toilet training problems

my 5yrold son has major toilet issues, he poos himself regularly or just has a little bit stuck on his bottom. He refuses to go to the loo sometimes and flatley refuses to wipe his bottom . It has become an issue at school. At first they were very patient with him , but it happens so often now that they have told him that he is big enough not to poo himself and to wipe his own bottom. He understands that it is not acceptable, but tells me he cant help it . He seems to have a real issue with all things toilet and has started to wet himself too. His teacher has told me he has tantrums and he gets cross very easily. She also has suggested he needs to grow up a bit as he is a bit babyish and demands attention all the time and he hates being alone . I think this is probably to do with my parenting , I do alot for all 3 of my children ( my other to children are 22 and 24) and fear I might be babying my 5 yr old , but I do wonder if he has constipation as he only( Massive) poos every 3 - 5 days. ANY advice would be so useful

We've just taken our DD (5) to the GP for similar problems. She has faecal impaction and has been prescribed movical. Have you seen your GP?

we have been to our GP . Our son had not pooed for 5 days , but had eaten lots.
The GP felt his tummy and told us he wasnt impacted etc , and to go home and up his fluid intake. I took it upon myself to give him prunes and califig ,which was hugely effective ! .The school will only let the children have water in their water bottles, not juice or squash , our son really doesnt like water so his daily fluid intake is low. I smuggled weak squash into his bottle yesterday and it was empty when he came home ! We have spoken to school today and asked if he can take squash for the time being. I have no wish to isolate him as the child who must be indulged etc, or to end up on the loonie parent list in the staff room!

One way around the water at school issue is to give him that flavoured water you can buy. You can dilute it about half and half with water, tastes flavoured and looks like water.
My eldest dd used to take this to school.
