8mo now mobile - all the injuries are making me really anxious!

My DS is just 8 months, he's been crawling for about 2 weeks and thinks the world is his osyter! He's apparently decided that crawling is not enough and keeps standing up which was fine when he was holding onto things but now he has started doing this sort of Mowgli walk on his feet and hands and then standing upright...inevitably after a second or so he falls. Not too bad if he falls on his bum but so far this week we have had a massive bump to the head where he fell against the skirting board (egg like lump on forehead and horrible bruise) and a bang to the mouth causing his 2 bottom teeth to cut his top lip and there was loads of blood! I try to catch him before he falls but for every 5 times I manage to get him there's always 1time I don't.

I want to give him some freedom but I'm turning into this over anxious parent! I'm chuffed that he's doing the standing up thing and am very proud when he walks along holding the sofa but I feel like a horrible mother when he hurts himself! What if someone thinks I'm abusing him or something?

It's tough. Mine is a bit older but still find it really hard although I am becoming less of a nervous wreck. On the plus side, where DC used to really cry with each bump, has become much tougher and just gets up and tries again. All you can do is make sure there are no sharp edges and dangerous objects in his way. I haven't sat down for ages!

Oh dd was like this, she use to get a massive bruise or cut when we were due to see the gp or hospital Smile. The pead at the hospital even said he would be more concerned if a mobie child didn't have a bump or bruise and its all part of learning.

Recently my 2.10 year old gave himself a black eye and a badly bruised cheek within hours of each other. Nursery didn't bat an eye.

Don't worry so. They are very tough and bruises are expected!

Perfectly normal and all part of his learning to walk etc.

I have lost count of the number of times DS2 has had a bruise on his head as he constantly seems to bang it on something (he is now 3.5 and still as bad).

I remember one morning when he was about 2.5 he was in his bedroom by himself, no crying or anything and appeared with a black eye Hmm To this day, I still have absolutely no idea how it happened - try explaining that to everyone (including nursery) who ask what happened Grin

As another poster has said. just make sure there are no sharp edges or anything and he will get better Smile

all normal and no-one will think you are abusing him! my ds2 walked at 9mths and was always falling over and putting his teeth through his lip and yes there is lots of blood, the lip, tongue etc heals really quickly tho.

just try and make your house as toddler friendly as you can but some bumps and bruises are too be expected, its all part of the learning curve :)

Ahhh, the days when DS stayed in the same place i plonked him down in [goes all misty eyed]

I'm afraid the inevitable bumps and bruises are all part of childhood (and parenthood!) and they only get worse. Sorry!

DS, 17 mo has an accident log book at his CM that resembles War and Peace. And it has got worse since he's started climbing. On everything. I worry too about someone calling social services - his most recent lump/ bruise was an absolute corker.

You never quite get used to them hurting themselves, but you learn to relax a little more over time i think. And it's how they learn after all.

Thanks for the advice... It's just happened so quickly! Literally went from only just able to roll to crawling and trying to stand (with all the bumps, bruises and falling off the bed(once, now banned from our bed!) that have seemed to go with it) within a matter of about 2-3 weeks! Sure I'll get more used to it eventually!

my ten month old has a bump on his head almost everyday. at first it worried me but really it's all part of the learning curve.
