Advice from HV that I'm not sure whether to take?

I went to see the HV yesterday who made some recommendations that I am not sure about. Usually I don't pay any attention to HVs as I've met some really not great ones but I really like and respect this one. My son is 5 months old and really not interested in the bottle since he started solids about 6 weeks ago. After assessing him she said I should start him on a cup. That sounds seriously early to me but I don't know? He is crawling, feeding himself, sitting himself up, sitting up, holding things with ease etc etc but still it seems quite young to me? She also suggested I put cheese and yoghurt into his food. That I am really not sure about, dairy for a 5 month old?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

All seems quite normal to me.

Finallygotaroundtoit · 28/04/2012 07:16

I'm surprised that she wasn't Hmm about a 14 week old being weaned so early

He should have more milk and less food

Finallygotaroundtoit · 28/04/2012 07:18

Meant to say if a bottle means more not less milk, carry on with bottles

Does he feed himself?

SpagboLagain · 28/04/2012 07:19

Cup sounds fine. DS1 was ebf and then we found he completely refused to tAke a bottle. So we introduced a cup at about 4 months, a doidy cup was good. Just held him upright and went very slowly with little sips.

Re dairy, I didn't introduce until 6 months (started weaning at 5). But I think that was just where we were up to, not sure there is a specific reason not to if you are well into weaning already? I do remember you're supposed to wait till 6 months for wheat though.

RationalBrain · 28/04/2012 07:22

Sounds like he's having too much solids, putting him off his bottle. Have you tried giving him his milk feed first and cutting down the solids?

I agree, would keep solids to very basic rice and veg at this stage, as he's weaned already bu not yet 6 months.

RationalBrain · 28/04/2012 07:24

Spagbol - it sounds like he was being ff not bf though? Is that right op?

kcj748 · 28/04/2012 07:26

I do keep the food very basic, just a few chicken nuggets, chips, ketchup etc you know the sort of thing.

But seriously, I am of course trying to keep his main food being milk and food just for fun. Sorry I wasn't clear. It isn't that he doesn't want his milk following his solid meal (I always give bottle first). What I meant was that even at other times of the day he is not interested in the bottle (when there are no solids in sight).

Maybe he is having too much solids? They might be making him full and stopping him from drinking enough milk.

kcj748 · 28/04/2012 07:31

PS he was bfed up until fairly recently but took to being ff reasonable well. He has never really been that interested in eating though, bf or ff (too busy looking around, doing things etc) and ended up being a real struggle to get him to eat in the day and he did all his eating at night (20 oz a night usually!). That is why I started him on solids which he has taken to really well and absolutely can't get enough of.

PPS he has one solid meal a day and he always wants more than I give him

Biscuit
kcj748 · 28/04/2012 07:41

Not sure what Biscuit means (don't know MN that well) but wasn't meaning to be a dick, sorry if it came across like that.

If he doesnt want milk, I'd definitely introduce dairy.

catsareevil · 28/04/2012 07:44

If he is 5 months old he needs milk. Formula is fortified, so will provide nutrients that cheese or yoghurt wont. Have you tried cutting back on the solids kcj?

StealthPolarBear · 28/04/2012 07:48
Shock Just read the chicken nuggets line and didn't pick up on the sarcasm :o Still - am surprised she didn't say soemthing about the early weaning
RationalBrain · 28/04/2012 07:56

Hmmm, in that case it sounds like your hv was actually being helpful. If he's only having one small lot of solids, but is refusing the bottle then it's worth trying a cup. A freeflow tommee tippee type maybe? Can't hurt to try it. Or a different type of formula?

conorsrockers · 28/04/2012 08:03

My DS1 went off milk completely at 5 months - he would not entertain it at all. He had the normal meals (porridge/banana/snacks/lunch/dinner etc...) and drank squash out of a beaker with a lid.
He is now 9, perfectly healthy and eats brilliantly - oh, and likes a drink of milk before he goes to bed Hmm.
We just fed him LOTS of petite filous, cheesestrings etc...
Sounds like pretty fair advice Smile

IceCreamCastles · 28/04/2012 08:27

Could you mix formula into his food? Eg into porridge, mashed potato etc?
5 months fine to use a cup but not to the detriment of him getting enough nutrients from his milk

dribbleface · 29/04/2012 21:25

i know this sounds odd but with Ds2 i reduced number of milk feed's to 7, 2, 7, 10 and he went back to drinking 7 ounce's at each feed. when i fed him 7, 11, 3, 7 and 10 he was only getting about 16 ounce's a day.
