That's all really. ds is 5 and I cannot bear to see him with his finger(s) stuffed up his nose a second longer. I am also bored of nagging reminding him about it.

Any bright ideas? Pleeeeeease?! It is gross.

I don't think you can. I tell ds to go upstairs and do it in private.

hathorkicksass · 19/04/2012 13:18

I'd love to know if you find out Grin

Pagwatch · 19/04/2012 13:20

Does he eat it?
That anti-nail biting stuff woukd work if he does.

festi · 19/04/2012 13:39

my dd was guilty of does this, she recently gave herself constant impetigo. My stratorgy was that I stopped telling her to stop picking her nose. I simply gave her a tissue and encouraged her to use that then sent her put tissue down toilet to wash her hands, she soon became accustomed to having to get up, dispose of tissue and wash her hands every 5 mins and soon got fed up of this and she has seriously reduced her nose picking habbit. I also just move her hand away from her nose without saying anything if I catch her in time, this also worked in stopping it instantly. The nail biting stuff made no difference to my dd but may work.

DestinationUnknown · 19/04/2012 14:24

Thanks everyone.

Right. Nail biting stuff on shopping list. Tissues at the ready (I do give him a tissue, I will add on the taking it to the bin or toilet as that sounds like a good habit breaker). Moving the hand away doesn't work, it's back within a nano-second.

Does he eat it... don't think so, but he has started biting his nails too, so may kill two birds with one stone.

I think he may just need something for his hands to fiddle with tbh.

Watches thread with interest.

nickelhasababy · 19/04/2012 16:24

ha!
good luck with that.
I was a nose-picker all the way through childhood - no matter what my parents did, they couldn't stop me. Blush

you have to make it habit for him always to use a tissue for doing it, though. you might not stop it, but you can make it more hygenic Grin

ps - eating bogeys is good for immune system.

JustHecate · 19/04/2012 16:25

chop their hands off Wink

nose picking makes me heave. My eldest went through a phase of it and then sucking his finger. I am dry retching just typing it.

I'm afraid I did all the wrong things - mainly telling him it was disgusting and to bloody stop it right now!

He has grown out of it now, thank god.

festi · 19/04/2012 16:34

i once read that eating boggies is an essential source of salt and minerals for children, they crave boggies when they are naturally low on minerals and sodium. Have no idea if that is true

JustHecate · 19/04/2012 16:36

You can take "waste not want not" too far

Dropdeadfred · 19/04/2012 16:41

Seeing as the contents of your nose are trapped there to stop them entering your body how could they be classed as being beneficial to eat? It's just mucus mixed with dust and dirt... Yum!

JustHecate · 19/04/2012 16:44

can't believe I googled this

or this

I feel sick.

But at least it demonstrates, as DDF says, that it is NOT a good idea to eat them

lisaro · 19/04/2012 16:47

Chop their fingers off - works every time, ask my sons, Stumpy and Kingpin.

< I'm not reading any links>

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 19/04/2012 16:52

Its never really bothered me with mine.

....

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 19/04/2012 16:59

Seriously though I would keep their nails short and get them to wash their hands when I catch them.

DonInKillerHeels · 19/04/2012 17:03

My grandfather promised to pay me if I stopped an irritating habit of clearing my throat every few minutes when I was 5. Apparently it only took a day, and I never did it again. Worth a try?

JustHecate · 19/04/2012 17:05

That's ok, Hate. The key words to remember are dust, dirt, germs and fungus.

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 19/04/2012 18:04

[gross]

nickelhasababy · 20/04/2012 13:31

Dropdeadfred · 20/04/2012 22:01

That link does not say it is wise... Just says it may help.. But could also make you ill!!

nickelhasababy · 21/04/2012 14:02
