Unusual that 16.5 month likes a quick morning nap still?

My 16.5 month DS usually sleeps around 1.15 for 1.5 - 2 hours and about 30 mins in morning too.

We thought we'd try drop morning nap as none of his mates still nap then. A few times he's been fine, other times get sleepy so we've given him a nap and he's gone into deep sleep.

Is it unusual for his age to still need it?

If he sleeps well at night then just stick with it and count yourself very lucky!- jealous

Gobblygook · 16/04/2012 14:33

Really? I worry he needs too much sleep...

If we're out on the school run/dog walk sometimes 16month old ds will nap. He also sleeps same as yours in the afternoon and 11-13hrs at night. But he is non-stop when awake.

Gobblygook · 16/04/2012 14:38

Yes he's v into everything when awake. He's also a late walker - close but not quite - but is busy trucking all over when awake - wonder if that's exhausting for him

Or he's just a sleeper!

The only point where I got uptight about that morning nap with my now 17 mo was when he was cutting back on his supposed 2-hour afternoon nap. Sometimes I allow him 5 mins in the morning if he's really knackered or under the weather but generally now he cuts it out himself. It's better as he usually has a really good long nap at 1230.

Gobblygook · 16/04/2012 14:45

How do you allow him 5 mins? What do you do? Does he sleep for 2 hours at 12.30?

Mine was still having two naps at 19m. I know no napping theory, but just offer anectdotal evidence for your consideration!

Gobblygook · 16/04/2012 15:44

Surgeon - how long were the naps?

I've made the mistake of trying to make my ds just like my dd. She wasn't the best sleeper, but had dropped to one nap by 14 months. My DC (coming up on 14 months) still is more than happy to have 2 naps, one morning 1-1.5h and one afternoon 2h. He also goes down at 7 and sleeps through to 6.30 (works for us because we are out of the house by 7.15). I tried to make him drop his nap but it just hasn't worked. I've finally just realised he is a good sleeper and that he will come to drop that nap when he no longer needs it. If he were to start waking earlier than his 11.5 hour throught the night I might tamper, but for now I've realised as long as he continues to sleep through the night then I really shouldn't mess with his daytime naps!

Thanks - that's helpful to know

DD1 still had two daytime naps when she turned 2! Each one lasting 1 to 2 hours. All children are different - I wouldn't consider reducing them unless you think it's affecting her nighttime sleep.

DS (almost 17 mo) still has a short morning nap sometimes, though he does now seem to be dropping it. I go on the basis that if he's tired i'll put him down, if not then he can go longer. He's very active too and my CM says that she believes this is the reason he still needs a morning nap - before she met him she had always had children who dropped their am nap by about 14 mo, so her plans went to pot a bit when DS came along and liked his sleep!

bigkidsdidit · 16/04/2012 20:08

My 15mo still has an hour in the morning and two hours after lunch. No signs of it going any time soon, he's a wreck if we miss it. It's a good thing!

According to Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, 95% of children have at least 2 naps at 12 months, 50% have 2 naps at 18 months and (IIRC) 5% have 2 naps aged 24 months.

I think his figures are based on data from the children in his practice (he's a paediatrician in the US). So it's pretty normal I think.
