She only stay awake for 2 hours tops and through the night goes straight back to sleep after her feed.
I know it's an unusual complaint, but worried she isn't awake enough.
Any help anyone?

2 hours awake in a 3 month old is pretty normal span as is going straight back to sleep at night?

How is she when she is awake? Is she bright and alert at times? Does she wake for feeds? How is her weight gain?

Olivetti · 09/04/2012 16:24

My little one was the same - sounds normal to me!

Louboo2245 · 09/04/2012 16:28

She is a fussy eater. I chose to formula feed as I suffer from gall stones and the painkillers I take could affect her, and her feeds vary from draining a 6 oz bottle to only taking an ounce. She usually feeds between every 4-6 hours.
She is gaining weight with no problems.
Am I just fretting over nothing then?
When she is awake she will spend time under her baby gym and singing songs(or rather I sing at her :) ). She gurgles away when you talk to her.

She sounds absolutely fine then. All the things like not waking for feeds, not being alert at times and slow weight gain could be that she wasn't getting enough milk. From everything you've said she sounds perfect!

Just had a look at the No Cry Sleep Solution (a book which I suspect you won't need EnvyGrin) and Pantley says that at 3 months she should be having 3 naps a day, total nap time for all three naps put together should be 5 to 6 hours and she should be getting 10 to 11 hours a night making it 15 hours sleep out of 24. However, all babies are different and this is only a guide Smile.

Sounds just like my 3 month old DD except that mine feeds a bit more. Smile

Louboo2245 · 09/04/2012 16:57

This is what I don't like about books, I've tried to follow the contented little baby book (I used it for my son who is now 8) which says she should be having no more than 3 to 3 and a half hours during the day tops. but she sleeps too much to stick to the routines. Which I think is why I was concerned to start with.
But I think I'm just going to see where the wind take us, as long as she's healthy, everything is good.
Thank you for reassuring me my daughter isn't some abnormal baby :)

Think that's the thing about GF though, she hasn't had any babies herself and very little of her information is evidence based. Much prefer my childcare books evidence based and written by a Mum like Elizabeth Pantley or Caroline Deacon Smile.

If its any help I was given a copy of TCLBB and I burnt it. It was the only time that book made me feel good Grin.

Hi Lou

My (just) 3 month old DS2 can only usually manage an hour and a half of awake time before he has a feed and dozes off again! He's the same as your LO at night - just goes straight back to sleep after a feed.

I'm not too worried as he's doing all the things he should- smiling, babbling, rolling over and he's very alert and cheerful when he is awake! The HV said there's nothing to worry about and we've just got a champion sleeper!

DS1 was a miserable non sleeping little bugger so this is all quite odd to us as well!

SalsaP · 09/04/2012 20:26

My 3 month old is the same and can only manage to stay awake for an hour and a half before getting really tired and grumpy. He also sleeps straight after a night feed - although for the last 5 nights he has dropped his night feed and sleeps through! In a baby week by week book it says at this stage they should have 14-16 hours a sleep a day which probably is about what your little one has. Mine certainly does! The only difference is that mine feed every 3 hours during the day which is probably how he can now manage to sleep through the night as he gets plenty of milk in the day.

Louboo2245 · 11/04/2012 20:34

Now worried she's not rolling over! :)

The milk thing through the night is bothering me, as I don't want it to become the routine of she gets her milk through the night and doesn't bother through the day. I might start reducing what I give her in her early morning feed and see if I can get it to swap around? Any tips with that.

I'm glad to know I just have a good sleeper, thanks guys x

There's always something to worry about isn't there! Don't worry about the rolling over yet, my DC1 only did it once and much later than he should have. He also didn't crawl till he was 11 months. Now a very sporty, happy, academic 7yo Smile.

Not sure on the milk thing, have you asked on the Breast & Bottle section? You may get some more replies to that question on there Smile

Nikkim30 · 12/04/2012 12:41

Mine was the same at 3 months, I spoke to the doctor about it, but she stopped sleeping so much shortly after, I wouldn't worry, some babies just need more sleep.

Latootle · 12/04/2012 21:05

no two babies are the same. In my day if your baby was awake at all between feeds every 4 hrs minimum, no buts... you were read the riot act. As long as you know she is happy and alert when awake dont worry. good luck

Rosebud05 · 12/04/2012 21:08

It's probably a growth spurt - the growth hormone is released when they sleep.

She'll 'wake up' and move into a different phase of babyhood around 4 months, and be more awake then.

Morph2 · 13/04/2012 00:45

don't worry about rolling over its not a mile stone, i got worried as my DS never rolled over except for a couple of times by chance, however he walked at 14 months so all within normal range
