My 6mo DD wants to crawl back into the womb!

I've swaddled my DD from day one and, hurrah, she's always slept through. She now seems to need more and more cosseting to get off to sleep though. First it was a gentle stroke on her head, then resting a hand on her cheek and then it progressed through a hand in front of her face to now needing her eyes entirely covered with a muslin or a hat!

Has anyone got any tips for weaning a baby from swaddling? I think maybe now is the time to take the bull by the horns before I end up having to completely mummify her to get her to nod off!

have you tried any of the grobags ? maybe she need to feel warm that s all - I dont know really mine never really liked swaddeling

My DS is pretty much the same with regards to the swaddling, although doesn't need anything around his face to get him to sleep. We have tried weaning him off the supertight swaddling, but he rubs his eyes and flails his arms about when tired, whacking himself in the face, thus preventing sleep. So we're sticking with the swaddling for now! (He's 10 months btw).

We're going to attempt gro-bags again in the near future, but not holding out much hope! So the swaddling I think is normal so don't worry about that, but the covering the face thing...not so sure. Is the room dark enough for her? Sorry, not much help!

One of my DTs has always liked to sleep with a muslin on her face if that's any help disclaimer - not when she was tiny and might sufocate!

ZuzuandZara · 09/04/2012 13:16

Don't know why that was bold and I've just realised you've said she has a muslin.

Most useless post ever.

Good luck!

Thank you for your replies, pleased to know my DD isn't the only one!

My eldest DS was like this. We moved from swaddling to a Peke Moe (google it) which worked really well (he was about 7/8 months), although we did then have to use the Peke Moe for at least 6 months before he would tolerate a sleeping bag. With DS2 we used an ergococoon once we stopped swaddling, then the Peke Moe, then a sleeping bag (he was younger when we stopped swaddling, about 4 months - it was summer though and warm at night and I do think that might have helped). I'm a bit of a sucker for specialist kit, as you can probably tell!

I was so worried about my DS not ever being able to sleep without being swaddled. But I didn't need to worry. I started by introducing a grobag for naps and then just before he was 7 months I put him in it at night. Had a couple of like wake ups a couple of nights but all was fine and we've not looked back. He was actually waking up more when he broke out of his swaddle towards the end so I knew it was time to transition. Good luck.

Hate to say it but we have a DD who is 6 who isn't so different!
