Why is 15 m DS touching his ear?

It's not all the time but occasionally he'll flick or touch his ear. Sometimes put his hands over both. He's got a heavy cold at moment so wondered if his ears were blocked but not sure it's related.

Is this normal behaviour?

They could hurt or feel full and he doesn't understand. I would think if they hurt he'd be crying, so probably just filled up.

If you're concerned, call OOH or NHS24 or whatever you have where you live.

Could be teething, or the cold could be an ear infection. Might be worth getting him checked out at GPs on Tuesday if it hasn't improved by then.

Earache? Teething? Just something else to mess with?

ConstantCraving · 08/04/2012 22:13

Don't want to worry you but best get him checked out. it's probably just teeth but my DD 2.5 was doing this, and seemed fine until Friday when she woke up at 5am screaming! Took her to the doctor to be told she had a really bad ear infection and her ear drum was on the point of rupture! Felt awful that i hadn't taken her before but she really seemed fine, other than a bit of a cold. On antibiotics now and on the mend thank god!

I don't think they hurt perhaps they're blocked. But he's been doing it a bit longer than the cold has been here.

I don't know - it sounds insane and I'll probably be flamed but I knew a neighbours son who had ASD and I remember him touching his ears - playing with them or covering them, though admittedly he had an aversion to noise which DS definitely doesn't have

Could be teething too, the molars can cause earache.

I wouldn't worry - ear touching/pulling is common for lots of reasons - I don't think it's a definite sign of ASD :)

My baby does that when he's tired or not well.
