it's not daddy because she can say that, well DaDa anyway. This is a different sound and she says it quite a lot but at different things. Any ideas?

'Ta-da"? 'Did it'? 'Dinner"? Good luck trying to suss it out! Half my day nowadays is spent translating toddler talk!

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 06/04/2012 09:56

That? There?

Dd (also 1) said 'duhduh' for agggggeeessss whilst bringing me the remote control. It means 'little charlie bear' in her world apparently.

HettyKett · 06/04/2012 09:57

there! there?

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 06/04/2012 09:57

Been watching The Simpsons ????

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 06/04/2012 10:13

Assuming that its unlikely she is trying a Homer 'Doh',my serious guess is that its a question like 'that?' (as in 'What's that?)

bigkidsdidit · 06/04/2012 10:16

Mine says duh duh to mean bye bye!

DeepThought · 06/04/2012 10:16

quite likely to be a portmanteau word for lots of things, you might be able to deduce from context/body language

PaigeTurner · 06/04/2012 12:40

Means 'that' here.

ElleOhElle · 06/04/2012 12:58

hmm, yes 'that' or 'what's that?' sounds possible. I'll try answering her with what ever she's pointing at and see what reaction I get. :)

Pascha · 08/04/2012 12:43

My 19 month old still says variants of duh to mean pretty much anything really. It was his base sound for ages.

Had similar with my dd. it also turned out to be 'what's that?'.

edam · 08/04/2012 13:11

Aw, mimmit, you've just reminded me that ds used to say 'duddle' for cuddle. And 'dacey' for 'Stacey' (his nanny).

Elle, agree 'duh-duh' could well mean 'that thing, over there, bring it to me now/what does it do/looks interesting'. You just have to keep trying different things until you work it out.

toddler mispronounciations are the cutest thing ever. My daughter truncates lots of words at the moment which is sweeet- so we have mato for tomato and carden for cardigan, among others. But my favourite is flum for thumb. I lol a lot when she's singing "4 fingers one flum keep moving"...

norvegicus · 08/04/2012 19:52

my ds who is 1 nxt week(!) also says that, but with him its one of a series of sounds - eg he said dada to everything for a bit then mama + now also baba. i think he's just trying out all the sounds he can make as he calls everything the same thing. oh for a babel fish!
