I thought my dd's speech was good for her age (first child so nobody really to compare to). But yesterday my auntie came crashing down on me like a ton of bricks saying her vocabulary is "extremely limited" for her age. She says a lot of two word phrases and now and again three words in a string but do I now need to be concerned? Her nursery are really pleased with her progress :/

No,IMO, you don't need to be concerned, 2 or 3 word phrases are great for her age, if you and ner nursery aren't worried (well until auntie crashed in!), then I would just ignore your auntie and enjoy your chatty dd.

Who is Auntie? How much experience of 22 month olds?

first1 · 05/04/2012 10:50

Little of toddlers, but she use to be a reception class teacher so I guess that's why her comments bothered me as she does know a fair bit about young children and speech Confused

My DD had a bunch of 2 and 3 word phrases at that age, but around her 2nd birthday her speech seemed to come on massively every single day. She is 2yrs 2 mo now and can string long sentences together. She's my only one too so nowt to compare with but she seems to be doing ok with it.

ReallyTired · 05/04/2012 10:54

She sounds fine. It she is saying litle two to three word phases then she is doing well. She isn't even two fgs.

oohlordylordy · 05/04/2012 10:59

Please just remember they are all different and 50-odd words, plus the beginnings of sentence formation, at that age is (I would say) bang on.

FWIW, my DD at 22months was speaking in sentences. We went on holiday and she told me that the pizza was delicious, the cake was disguisting and that EuroDisney was the most magical amazing place she'd ever seen.

At 22months, my DS had not uttered a word. At 34 months, he had maybe around 20 words. He's now coming up 4 and his language is within normal ranges, but he still struggles with sentence formation. I am confident that by the time my children are 5 and 6 respectively, it will be impossible to tell which one spoke early and which one needed a little help from SALT

And, I'd like to add that DS (who is 13 months older than DD) is WAY more intelligent.

Don't believe anyone who tries to correlate speech (whether fast or slow) to intelligence.

CecilyP · 05/04/2012 14:53

Your DD sounds absolutely fine - which is more than can be said about your auntie. It is her knowlege of of babies' speech which is 'extremely limited', which isn't really surprising if her career involved teaching 4 and 5 year olds. What was the point of her coming down on you like a ton of bricks? What on earth did she expect you to do about it?

Your DD sounds ahead of the game if she is already using 2 and 3 word phrases. It won't be long till she starts to boost her vocabulary by saying 'whassat?' every five minutes when she sees something she doesn't know the name of.

lingle · 05/04/2012 17:44

agree with the others, knowledge of 4/5 year old speech irrelevant, 2/3-word combos quite advanced at this age!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/04/2012 17:46

Ignore your auntie, she is spouting rubbish.

EBDteacher · 05/04/2012 17:52

Is your DD tall for her age? My 19mo DS is MASSIVE and I find that even people who know perfectly well how old he is expect too much from him. It is really hard not to look at him and just fall into treating him like a 3yo.

first1 · 05/04/2012 18:20

I'm not too sure tbh. She's 87cm and 22months. That thought hadn't occurred to me EBD
